Instrumentation question. . .

Has anybody ever seen one of those accoustic bass guitars in a session?

E.g.

It seems like it would be a nice way to add some unique-but-acceptable accompaniment to a lot of tunes. It would be nice to play a true bass instrument without lugging a full upright around or violating accepted covetions with an amp and electric bass.

One of the problems I can see is that they tend to be kind of quiet.

Acoustic bass guitars are available from many makers, but they don’t often make them unless pre-ordered, e.g. Fender, Gibson, etc. I guess there just isn’t that big a market for them, and they’re pretty expensive.

I just tried out a takamine. It was nice. Good action, good sound, around $500 give or take.

It was just too darned quiet to be of much use in a session :frowning:

i have played accoustic bass guitar at a few sessions. but depends on the size of the session if it really contributes anything. as wormdiet says they are generally drowned out by the other instruments.
it was most succesfull with two to three other musicians, or when we played as a scratch band.
