Can anyone offer information on the slow air, Mickey Finn’s, as played by Seán Ryan on his CD, Minstrel’s Fancy? I’d be interested to know who composed it, or if it holds “traditional” status. If anyone can let me have the dots for it (ABC, GIF, OWHY)or knows where I can get them, that would be wonderful. My (admittedly, less than thorough) search for references to it has not been fruitful and I would appreciate some help. Thanks!
This is one of the few tunes I learned by ear and going by what I read in another post I should learn them all that way!! It is definitely one of my favourites. I Can’t help you on getting the notation but I am sure a man of your calibre could write it out!
I have written to my brother (Mike) in Galway who owns Mulligan Records http://indigo.ie/~mulligan/ and posed this question to him. If anyone knows - he will.
There was a fiddler from Galway called 'Mickey Finn’who was very well known in the local session circle. He died a few years back and there is a possibility that this tune is dedicated to him, or that he used to play it a lot and hence the name. Sean Ryan is also a Galway local…This is just supposition on my part but I will let you know what Mike has to say when he answers back.
Cheers,
Gerry

Sorry Mick..if you could write it out then you would already know the tune!! My brain isn’t always in touch with my fingers. If you get really stuck I will write it out for you, but it’s quite easy to learn from the CD.
Neil, the Mick Finn’s you directed me to isn’t the same tune, but thanks for trying.
Gerry, I really appreciate your efforts to track down the details for me, and I look forward to hearing your findings.
Dave, hehehe. I suppose I really should say that I have already learned the tune by ear from the CD, and I could write out the dots if I tried, but I was hoping to save myself the effort! Just lazy you see. But quite apart from that, I really would like some background information on the tune, especially who the composer was/is, so I thought I might as well ask.
I am still waiting for a response from my brother. He did indicate that because of the Arts Festival in Galway at the moment he may not get to his emails as much as he would like.
Anyhow I haven’t forgotten you and will post the response as soon as I get it.
mickey finn’s air,was in fact written by mick’s father. mickey played it at sessions in galway.there is a lovely version of it on a recording by gerry carthy; who played many a session with him.the cd is called the hurling boys, and can be got from gerry carthy@aol.com.the tune may have been written in callan co. kilkenny, where mick’s father worked in a bank .
