Indication of new private messages?

In the last couple of days, I’ve noticed that new private messages have arrived without the usual indication that I have a new message. Is anybody else experiencing this problem? (You might have to check your messages to find out.) Does any body know why this is happening or what, if anyhting, I can do about it?

Are you logged in when you discover the message?
If not, the server wouldn’t know who you are.
Else if, sounds like a problem: contact Rick.
End if.

When I discover it, yes.

I don’t get the notification whether I’m logged in or not. Happened again just now; new private message but no flashing message. Whatever I’m doing, I’m sure it’s the same as I’ve been doing all along without this problem.

Thanks Marguerite. Good advice. I know this has happened to others in the past.

This looks like a problem for me rather than everyone. Given that it can happen though, it’s worth checking your messages from time to time, even if you aren’t being advised of the arrival of a new one.

I think it prolly has to do with how your browser is handling cookies. The program that runs the board seems to have problems with session variables, and if you don’t have cookies totally enabled (which is a HUGE security risk!) it tends to lose track of who you are.

If you’ll notice, sometimes, your ID appears automagically in the box when you’re doing a post or reply, sometimes it doesn’t. This is my first reply to this thread today. I filled in the username and password. Most of the time, from now on, I shouldn’t have to do that, but frequently, it loses my password, and bitches at me forcing me to go back and resubmit repeatedly (since it never goes back to giving me the entry fields). I suspect the same is true for PM’s, since they undoubtedly use the same cookies or session vars to keep track of who you are.

I’m going to post this, then immediately do another Reply to see whether it works properly this time. I’ll let ya know.

Okay, this time I seem to be logged in (that is, my userid of “serpent” is in the UL corner, and I don’t have to enter my password). I suspect that, had someone sent me a PM, that would be telling me about it now, as well. I’ll do so and get right back…

Yep, both working properly. I have one new PM, and the Reply function has me down as me.

I’m going to stay attached and try this in about 15 minutes. And I’m switching over to the test forum now, to avoid further OT stuff here…

Sorry, one final item on this here:

If you are showing “Logged in as…” when you go to the Forum Index, then your stuff is working correctly, and you will be notified of PM’s, and will have your userID showing in the Reply editor.
On to test forum now.

Thanks Serp. You might have it. I don’t know why you think your experiments are off topic: trouble with the board is the topic and you might be spot on about cookies. Wouldn’t explain why I’ve developed problems in the last couple of days though. Or would it?

That’s exactly right. Thanks again.

Wombat, you have a PM!

Just to say it’s happened to me, too.
Sometimes the message arives long
after it’s sent. I almost always
long in.

oops, never mind

Oh but we do, we do.

Just a little whine about the PMs for Rich and/or Dale (not important enough to bother them with an email): Wish there was a LARGER notification of PM. I find that even if I am being notified I have one, I don’t notice it because the type is so small. :frowning:
