Independence Day

Happy Independence Day  to those members who are US citizens but… how many of you are really independent and can you make and adjust your reeds or are you reliant on others :stuck_out_tongue:

John

(Its 7.48 in the morning here on the 4th July)

Cheers!

I haven’t made a reed in roughly 10 months, so my independent status may be in question…

indepenent here.
Don’t worry Joesph it’s like bike riding, you don’t forget how to

Whew!

I can’t help but wonder about your Aruno patch. Will it languish for ever in that Florida heat. It’s a shame not to harvest it yearly :frowning:
I always wanted to try some of your cane.

If you are in Alabama, as you avatar seems to say, it is likely that it is growing nearby. Where I am (3 states west) it is known as “Georgia cane” and grows nearly everywhere from the “Piney Woods” of East Texas to the riverbanks of the Rio Grande. It’s hard for me to drive anywhere and not see it too far from the roadside - usually near water. Pull over and have a look, but wear boots.

yes I see it often but only once have I found large enough diameter to use for chanter reeds. It worked out well though and makes good reeds, it works-gouges differently than the Spanish cane I have.

Joe,

'tis VERY healthy to take a bit of time off. not to long ago, i took a yr. off. that’s a healthy bit (the 10 mos. is), so you’re head oughta be clear.
conversely, Peter Hunter recently gave me a “reed a day” prescription!

…back to work!

The Arundo dearly loves the heat and the wet of Florida, I think that is a big contributor to its “softness”. However, its harvesting has to be timed fairly precisely given that all of that humidity almost always gives rise to quick molding and decomposition.

My patch and the home where I dwealt for nine years has been sold, alas. :sniffle:

Once I am able to get back to Florida to retrieve my stores, I shall follow a similar prescription.
