Just back from a business trip to Washington DC. Flew out there Monday so that night I decided to give the session at Nanny O’Briens a go. They had 7 or 8 fiddlers, a guitarist, various tinwhistlers and a piper that I ended up sitting next to for the session…it was Jarleth Henderson!
He is truly a phenomenal player, his Williams set was very sweet sounding. Talk about feeling a little intimidated, me armed with my Roberts practice set and my meager repertoire! I have to say there wasn’t an ounce of conceit in him and he was very encouraging, even pushed me into starting a set! Thankfully, my chanter was playing nicely in tune (or I would have felt like total dog doo) Ended up playing 5 or 6 tunes with him but mostly just listened and watched. Also enjoyed some great craic with him and other musicians. They are a really welcoming crowd there at Nanny’s, barely caught the last Metro back to the hotel! (In retrospect, probably should have gone ahead and missed the damn Metro, DOH!).
