In the glue!!

I’m currently repairing a leaky bellows by replacing the gusset. What’s the best type of glue to use for attaching a leather gusset to the bellows paddles?

I’ve read in another thread that 3M FAST 5200 is good for gluing synthetic bags. Could it be used for leather to wood?

Try contact cement. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean of any oils. Follow the directions on the can.

I also would use the contact cement, two or three coats, also it helps to rough sand the leather and wood before applying the glue. be careful as it is a one shot mating- can not be moved after contact. beat it firmly with a rubber mallot to set the glue. 3m 5200 would probably work but it is sooo messy.
best of luck, Tansy

When the glued sides have dried to the touch, you can put strips of newspaper on the boards. Once you position the leather where you want it, pull the newspaper out and press the leather and wood together. That will give you a little more wiggle roon to get things right.

I’ve been using 100% clear silicone caulking. Its messy to work with but the seal is good.

Hi PJ,
If you go to your local Canadian Tire and get a small can (comes with a brush in it) of LePage “pres-tite” contact cement that will do very nicely. It costs about $5.50 CAD. Apply one coat to your cheek (lightly sand first) and apply 2 coats to your gusset allowing the first coat to dry for about 1 minute. Press leather to wood and it should adhere on contact. You do not have to use a mallet to set the glue just press firmly.

Good luck.
