In and Out the Harbour

I was listening to an old The Irish Tradition Tape in the car this morning (Corner House). On it Breandan Mulvilhil plays this great ripping tune called In and Out the Ocean [In and Out the Harbour, actually]. (The beginning reminded me a bit of Pidgeon on the Gate, the sort of thing with a recurring roll or triplet on a low E or D). The playing is gorgeous, and unless my ears cheat me, he goes up a step after he’s played it through a couple of times, and then Bill McComiskey comes in on the box. Great, driving tune and I listened to it over and over. And to think that the kids today believe they invented Trance.

I think it’s called In and Out the Harbour, right? I gave away my copy of the LP years ago, but still remember that tune and Brendan’s firey playing of it.

Yeah, I think you’re right, In and Out the Harbour, that’s it! I wonder if it would work on whistle…

John Skelton does the tune on flute on his A Few Tunes. A great tune. This CD and book is must have for learning a great bunch of tunes.

I believe that the CD with tune book is $20 plus shipping. John can be reached at

If we’re thinking of the same tune- it’s a pretty smoking tune on the highland pipes. Bands such as Mackeel, Slainte Mhuath, Wolfstone, and i belive the Battlefield
Band(?) have recorded it. I’ll try to write it out if i can find the time. Cheers, William

That would be great! I thought it had that Scots GHB feel to it: drivings, sparse, repetitive. Very cool choon.

Is this it? From Norbecks.

Mmmmmh. Just from looking at it, that doesn’t seem right. But I don’t exactly here a tune in my head, looking at the abc. And it’s not Upstairs in a Tent, unless there’s more versions than one.

There are more versions than one – I was messing around trying to find ABCs for this tune you guys are talking about yesterday, and there seem to be at least two distinct “Upstairs in a Tent” tunes, with a similiar start to the B-part (which I assume is the source of the confusion).
