Important note for those who are also on PWA.

Please note that the Praise Whistlers forum seems to have been hacked.

I have never heard of such a thing, but I think I may be interested. Could you point me to it?

Walden: I noticed the PW board was down. What exactly does ‘hacked’ mean, in this context?
Best.

Do you think maybe we should meet at “the Crossing” for a while? It’s been ages since I’ve been there!

www.praisewhistlers.com

It appeared that someone crashed into the server and changed things up. It had an obscene title heading, and only one thread, and that was locked, and it gave a gmail address. Apparently an admin (I am not an admin… only a co-moderator) has logged on, as the hacker messages are gone, but boards aren’t back up.

That forum, and this one, and GC, and many others are powered by phpBB software. There has been a recent wave of hacking due to vulnerabilities in one recent updated version of the software. That trend has apparently been stopped by the most recent updates of the software. I navigated to the PWA forum and noted that they are using an old version of the software.

Mack Hoover is one of the founders of this board. I sent him an email.

Very sad to see this hatred that is portrayed by the hacker.

If all that energy had been spent to do something good or constructive, imagine what a better world this would be.

:astonished: :sniffle: I only “lurk” at PWA at the moment – but hacking such a wonderful site is so completely asinine. I hope the person responsible gets a real Power Surge from the Higher Authority … just to wake them up.

Hope it doesn’t take long to get up and running again.

The board is back up.

Yay!

Call me naive, but why would somebody do something like that? It’s not as though praise whistlers were controversial or offensive is it? Is this just like swearing loudly and repeatedly in church, or putting amphetamine in the tea at the retirement village, only safer because it’s anonymous?

I should have thought that those who are out to shock for the thrill of it would at least need the serious risk of getting caught to lubricate their jollies.
