I'm getting a keyed Flute Need tune.

I’m getting a second hand flute. I was able to play the scales and some basic tunes on my daughters on Sunday but now I need a couple of nice slow tunes that sound good and not like Baa Baa black sheep. I can play by ear and by music. Can anybody suggest a nice emotive air? :slight_smile:

Well, an easy one is Sally Gardens.

DEF- | EDE- | FAB| AD’A | BAF | EDD is how it starts…

I dunno if that shorthand made and sense, but I put a dash next to longish notes and an apostrophe next to high notes.

A more complicated, yet really pretty one is a Scottish air called Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of His 2nd Wife. It should be pretty easy to find online, as is Sally Gardens.

Try Amhran na Leabhar/Valencia Harbour/Song of the Books. same tune different names, I’d be surprised if you don’t find it at www.tinwhistletunes.com Also try “She moved through the fair” I think it starts on g and needs an Fn so you get to use the keys. What flute are you getting?

It’s a cheapo second hand Monique, in good condition, which might not be any use. I have to just take the risk. It arrived this morning and I can’t play lower notes down from F but can go up so my daughter is going to try it out this evening.

Well. It looks as if the pads are no good at the bottom as air leaks. :frowning: Not sure if I will be able to get it repadded professionally due to cost so cinsidering trying to do it myself. I’ve done the BFlat flute pads but they don’t have bars or springs. Trouble is I’ve taken a fancy to learning to play one now so in a quandry. Servicing a flute in Edinburgh is around £100 and as I only paid a fairly small amount I don’t know if it’s worth it.

Selkie - Search either here or over at www.thesession.org in their discussion forum for repadding flutes. There’s a method where you use cheap, hardware store silicone caulk to make simple pads that fit the contours of an older flute perfectly (it’s essentially take off the key, fill up the metal cup part with silicone, and I don’t recall the rest - but I thought, “Hey, even I could do that!” :smiley: ).

In the meantime put some tape over the holes which the pads are suppose to seal, or use blutac or something like that until you get some decent pads.
