There’s a woman on my street that has two Border Collies. They vociferously bark at anything that moves and if the wind so much as shakes a leaf on a tree they’re after it with all due speed. She can barely hang onto the leash and I fully expect that one day I’ll look out front only to find them dragging her down the sidewalk like a pair of Siberian Huskies pulling a sled.
Today I was waiting for my son’s school bus to arrive so I decided to pass the time by grabbing one of my bamboo flutes and tooting a bit. While I stood peering through the fanlight for the arrival of the bus, who do I see lugging down the sidewalk? I stood there and observed the usual tug of war for a moment and then a question popped into my head. “I wonder what would happen if…”, so I belted out a sustained 3rd octave E. Oooooh, fun!
Yes, you are a bad person. However, it could be viewed as pure science, which means you have now furthered mankinds’ knowledge of the effect of a third octave E on man’s best friend…so that is a good thing.
It’s called revenge mate …
Barking dogs are one of the worst things one has to cope with living in suburbia and are the main cause of friction between neighbours… I absoulutely HATE it ..
So ,well done to you Kirk…Next time put your Flute through a battery powered amp and give it heaps…
I’m a dog lover but a bad owner can ruin a good dog. She needs to get those dogs into obedience training. Now… I need to look into a good second hand amp.
I had neighbors once that had a cat that had litter after litter. He’d tell me, “Yeah, I really need to get her spayed one of these days.” Ya think? Then one day she crawled under his next door neighbor’s house and had another litter. Even after having to crawl under the house and remove the cats he was still too lazy to get it fixed. Amazing.
I made sure they were quiet before I hit the note and then they started barking frantically and pulling on the leash right after I started playing. I had both the main door and the storm shut but I knew they’d still hear it.
Is nobody else impressed that Kirk played a third octave E? On every keyless flute I’ve ever played that note was wickedly out of tune. Unless, of course, Kirk knew the dogs had perfect pitch and wished to taunt them even more; in which case he really is a bad boy.
Little known fact, Border Collies were bred and command tuned to the pitches of the bamboo flute, the preferred instrument of the local sheep herders of Anglo Scottish descent.
The 3rd octave E of the flute was the warning of wolves in the area, prepare for battle. Hopefully this poor woman was not harmed in your senseless prank.
You were a good boy. That person needs to know what can distract her dogs.
One of my friends trains service dogs. Last year she was training a dog that looked seriously unemployed. When I played my cane flute for my friend one day, her service dog in training became all interested and forgot she was working. My friend had to retrain for this variable.

What about poor Kirk B’s life …being harmed EVERY DAY by the constant barking of these dogs ? …what about the quality of of HIS life ??

Yes, but I’ve recently realized that the note was in fact an F and not an E. Based on the dogs’ reaction the 3rd octave E is the code for, “Free bacon! Hurry or I’ll eat the last piece.”
