A Hughes Chanter being offered up for 20 quid?
THAT makes it doubtful…
that’s the same type of pakistani chanter I started with…it actually plays quite well…sounds nice…in tune, etc…I keep it as my best spare…
I remember seeing a Pakistani 1/2 set stamped with Clan Uladh in the Hobgoblin Shop a good few years ago when they had premises in Cecil Sharpe House in Camden Town …I said to the assistant at the time whats all this bollax aboot Clan Uladh when they are obviously Pakistani Pipes.He told me they came frae the North O Ireland (the occupied bit) and I am pretty sure he said Hughes and McCleod …I said dream on and left…but reading the above maybe they did a spell of import/export back then in the early 90’s late 80’s…who knows ?who cares? :roll:
My point if there is one is watch out for Clan Uladh…they maybe OK as Antaine sayeth but I think that is the exception rather than the rule.

Theres a young lad here in St. Louis with one of those chanters and its not that bad. I belive it was Robbie Hughes that started importing pipes from Pakistan in the first place so that might explain Pakistani made stuff with his stamp on it.

One o my pupils also has a chanter made in Pakistan and it is fine(mind you it has been re reeded and reamed.)Its only a matter o time before they get it right…then there will be plenty of affordable sets on the market… that will burst the bubble of a few of ye won’t it!! :roll:

Getting it right once isn’t really a problem. Getting it right consistently is another kettle of fish. I don’t think we have to worry much about the Pakistani’s. And which bubble is that? It’s not like anyone’s getting rich making these things. The good makers do it for love of the music…or the glory . Glory doesn’t pay the heating bill though, does it?. The fact is they’d probably make better coin hauling garbage. Those guys get health benefits. Problem is, after you do this work for a while you’re probably not much good for anything else.

The turnings on the wind cap tend to confirm that the chanter is a Sailkot City Special. Glad to hear it’s playing well–that’s a nice bit of luck to have a spare reed that works well in your new mystery chanter.
