I was just wondering about this.
I use my flutes and whistles in comping a non-trad band in our church
Music are contemporary sounding/ a bit pop rock/ a bit ballad to be exact.
The mixer person normally sets me in 12 o’clock on all the knobs as a default.
I normally adjust to the microphone if I need to thicken or thin my voice but I can not do it with a flute/whistle.
I experimented on the mixer board to find which combination suits the flute/whistle and my own voice. Note that I am doubling with voice on some parts then shifts to flute on some parts.
I find that flutes/whistles sound good on low registers if the Mid and Low are on 2 to 3 o’clock and the second octave sounds smooth and mellow if the High is on 9 o’clock.
On the otherhand low and mid on the opposite direction seems bad to the low notes and high on the opposite sounds pitchy.
The setting suits my voice as well since I am Countertenor who sings in 3 harmony parts tenor, soprano and alto depending on the song
The tessitura of my voice is very light. Though via vocal technique I can make it dark.
There was just one song where the lead singer is a Tenor. Normally I sing in Alto if the lead is Tenor. It just so happen that Soprano background singer sang in Alto (since the range is too high for her) so I shifted and I sang in Baritone.
Somehow it doesn’t sound good anymore. It sounded a little nasal and a little flat on the set-up I’ve mentioned. I shifted to Soprano instead. I felt cheated lol.
I admit that I am no expert in mixing.
Hence I am asking the usual mixing set-ups you do and why do you love the set-up.
If you can ellaborate on the knobs the better.
