The sheng is usually cited as the precursor to the concertina, accordion, and other keyed reed instruments. There was something of a fashion mania for things Oriental in the early 19th century. And supposedly, Wheatstone and others came across imported examples and were inspired to rework the concept.
I’d love to try one myself someday. IIRC, there’s a music professor here in San Diego who is big into shengs.
