I just found out that he was right here in my hometown of Kalamazoo Michigan last October and I never knew it. The distress is beyond comprehension. I haven’t seen them since 1979 in San Diego. The State Theater is one of those old, very ornate theaters with great accoustics and small enough so you feel close to the performers. I saw Bela Fleck there last June.
Anyway, JT will be in the US in August 2003. The schedule is still tentative but is online at http://www.j-tull.com
This time I’ll have to go to either Chicago or Mt. Pleasent to see them.
Ian will also be doing a “rubbing elbows” tour but there are no details yet.
Are there any other whistlers/fluters/Tullers from MI or Northern Indiana who might like to get a group together for one of these gigs?
Whoopie! The nearest Tull show for me will be at Tanglewood MA “with orchestra”-- that would be the Boston Symphony! Gonna hafta check that one out.
Anyone near enough to go to that show, let me know and maybe we can have a mini-C&F convention/session on the lawn at Tanglewood.
PS-- I tried to post a reply, stating that I had seen the Rubbing Elbows show back in Nov, and liked it a lot. That post didn’t seem to make it onto the board.
You ARE one lucky bum, Paul!
It’s the first time I really miss that bad to be so far away from the Boston S.O.!
Back in, what? 83, 84? the two very first CD’s I purchased were 1) a symphonic suite of Grieg’s by Boston/Ormandy, and 2)… Tull’s Aqualung.
I never listened to the (1) much, since I prefer so much my old Sir Beecham/London full version, however the coincidence remains.
Yipeee! I think I just ordered tix for the 8/12 Jethro Tull performance at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony ( I say “think” because there was a bit of a computer glitch at the final stage of the ordering-- I followed that with an e-mail inquiry to customer service to try to verify the order).
Should be a TERRIFIC show. The gates open at 5 for the 7 PM show, so there would easily be time for a little session on the lawn-- come one, come all!
Paul - I have tickets for the 8/12 Tanglewood show. Two of my sisters and the collective husbands and wives are going with me. My oldest sister is famous for packing a great meal for these things! We’ll have to figure out where/how to meet.
Jim
Oh yes, and Amy, get yourself and Mr. T some tickets!
Do these sell out fast? We’re going to be on vacation that week in the general vicinity of NY/PA, but might be able to run over for the JT concert. Do lawn tickets ever sell out or are they pretty much available up to the performance? I’d love to see you all, if so. (And Paul, maybe I’ll bring my “baby” bocote, if I have it by then!!!)
Hi Robin-- you should have it 'way before then. By all means bring it, and don’t forget your digital camera
Don’t wait TOO long to order lawn tix. I’ve only been to classical concerts at Tanglewood and sadly they never sell out, but pop shows may ( they sometimes do at nearby SPAC)
Jim, Robin, et al-- I just put a reminder to myself on my PDA to post something here on 8/5 or so about setting up a meeting time/place so we can all find each other at the sometimes hectic Tanglewood
I’m still checking to see when the Mt. Pleasent or Detroit dates are confirmed. I haven’t seen Tull since I was stationed in San Diego in '79.
Jethro tull was the reason I learned to play the flute to begin with. I first heard Cross Eyed Mary back in the early '70s and became a Tull addict.
Here’s a question. How many of you whistler/flute players have learned at least one of the flute parts from a Tull song? How many have you learned? Have they ever come in handy at a party?
Hey Geek4! I learned Bouree (Tull’s version of Bach) on the fife many years ago (I had the Stand Up album on 8-track, if that gives you an idea of the era). I still play it every once in a while.
