Has anybody ever heard of that song?
I was doing a search on the tune finder for Bean Phádìn, and I came across a tune called “I Won’t Be A Nun” (Bean Phádìn and Be A Nun share the same sequence of letters) which obviously got my attention with just it’s name. I did a search on google to find any info but couldn’t find anything.
Is it about anything specific, etc? Or is the name just misleading? 
No idea, but I’ve got the words to Bean Phádin if you’re looking for them.

I won’t be a nun is a marching tune which I have also seen recorded as O Sullivan the Great. Seamus Ennis used the title I won’t be a nun, taken from a set of wordds he heard sang t othe melody. Patsy Touhey recorded a three part version on an ediphone cylinder.
The version of Bean Phaidin my son learned in school has more verses than the one Beth lifted of the net.
There’s only one more verse in the version sung by Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola on An Raicín Álainn. If you find a transcript of the one your son sings I’d love to see the extra verses, Peter.
When I saw the thread title I was thinking that your run-in with the church across the parking lot was getting out of hand and now they were forcing you to become a nun…which I was concerned about becasue few males are ever accepted into the holy orders for vestal virgins. So I am relieved that it is only just a silly tune, a jig with a spot of the dew, or an air after a long meeting with Father Riordan.
But Sir cran, I’m delighted that this nun thing has nothing to do with you.

I’m not a virgin, and don’t want to be a nun (unless I get to fly).

In O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (the version with 1,850 tunes), “I Won’t Be a Nun” is number 1813 at the bottom of page 340. Interesting title for a march, heh.

Reply to my reply. Actually I’n not very wierd Cran, I just think outside the box most of the time. But day to day I’m as booring as oat meal.
But we are interested in the life and times of Cranberry, especially when it comes to the church/whistle imbroglio.

According to the source, the tune’s original name is O’Sullivan Mor and it was originally a song for harp?

Heh. My wife (Hong Kong born and raised, and Buddhist by family tradition) told me that as a little girl she was determined to become a Catholic (not Buddhist) nun when she grew up - they got to wear such neat costumes
