What fun! I played a note here, a note there, sometimes even a two-note riff. You don’t have to be perfect to play in the session here, thank goodness.
They play so fast! I only recognized one tune and they played it so fast I could not play a single note. I actually did better playing tunes I didn’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t learn how to play anything!
Sessions are fun. Did you take a tape or digital recorder? That’s a great way to be able to take the tunes home and learn to play with them. Also, if the folks are friendly (which they should be - a session should be fun), ask the tunes names so you know what you’re trying to play along with.
The tunes really can whip by, can’t they? No matter how long you’ve been playing, they’ll seem fast if it’s a tune you don’t know or don’t know well.
My boyfriend thought about taping them. Maybe we’ll try that.
I also wanted to add that my Folk Flute was just fine for playing in a session. I can’t say it was loud, since I didn’t play loud, but it was in tune well enough, as in tune as I am capable of. It’s a fine instrument.
It’s a good way to learn the music.Focus on the notes you play right and don’t worry about the the other notes.Soon as you get familiar with your session you’ll be able to play along and anticipate the coming notes.Beware you’ll need another flute and maybe a fiddle or bodhran in the near future.
Diane - sorry i missed it.
was Eliot there? did he play the flute?
they would not mind at all if you record, we have many times in the past, especially when someone brings in a new tune.
I’m not going to play the fiddle. I have one, but I give up. Maybe if they have a class in old-time American fiddle tunes again I will try it, but I really don’t have enough coordination. The session had enough fiddles anyway, and some really good ones. Even a master fiddle-maker.
I think maybe I can get my boyfriend to play the empty cardboard Guiness box. Maybe. He did say maybe he’ll play the plywood-board-with-heavy-shoe. At one point he was playing my actual shoe by tapping it with my penny whistle.
