Actually in France this is now officially known as “courriel,” replacing the term “e-mail.” This is a case where a term used widely in Québec actually got adopted in France, a nice switch. Québecois French has plenty of English influences (je vais checker mon courriel), but in some cases the Québecois stick closer to pure French than the French do. In France you have “parking” for example, but here you have “stationnement.” The stop signs in France say “stop,” but here they say “arrêt.”
The word for spam in French is “pourriel” – I love that.
