WITH THE POWER UNPLUGGED, if you touch the chassis before you go into it you are putting yourself at the same potential as the chassis which is the ground reference for the computer. Touch the chassis frequently if you feel a need to.
Static electricity issues were dealt with years ago by adding zener diodes to ICs and microprocessors to discharge any potential voltages that can blow out chips. MORE IMPORTANTLY, if you are connected to a ground strap that is connected to earth ground (ie, cold water tap or a chassis that is tied into that same ground) AND you somehow are working on a piece of electronics that is plugged into AC, you basically are at earth-ground potential and may be exposing yourself to a potentially hazardous shock.
If you want to see faster performance, dont copy your old HD to the new one. Reinstall or upgrade to a newer OS. I was amazed at the performance change when I went from Win2k to WinXP pro on a clean disc
Thanks David for the explaination on how the CD-R/RW’s work. I will checkout the Flash Drives too.
StewySmoot,
I thought about going to XP but my mom has that on her system and I hate it! It is so limiting and fake/cartoon looking. I am hoping to take my W98SE to my grave with me. Thanks for the warning about the AC. I hope that I will never have to touch the inside of my computer again after this. I know, I am dreaming.
The harddrive is installed and my computer can find it now. Thanks for all your help with this. I have to admit that I finally called Dell to talk me through getting it to recognise the HD. I feel like I cheated. But at least now it is up and working.
I NEED PCI card Help Now!
I disconnected my Zip drive and installed the IED cable on my CD-R/RW Drive instead and it is working great. I would still like to be able to use my Zip and I am going to try to find a PCI card to put in my motherboard to add the extra IDE Cable connector I need for it.
Where can I find a PCI card? Is there a special kind I need to ask for? Should I be able to just call my local computer shop and get one there? The way the Dell guy talked, It is going to be hard to find one. Do I need to find out what kind of motherboard I have on my computer?
