This whistle is the one I can’t quit playing (aside from the Burke of course). It has the rough/cheapo sound I like, yet it’s in tune, and it doesn’t squeal on the second octave. Very easy to control all around, yet still chirps.
I would recommend this one highly, worth the extra money. I still love and am experimenting with the Susato VSB, still love my Sweetones, and the good Gens I finally got, but this is the one I keep reaching for.
I find myself not liking the extreme breathiness of the original Clarkes as much, except maybe for slow airs or mournful-sounding stuff. The Jerry-tweaked Shaw A is wonderful for this type of stuff.
What fun, though hard to explain to the rest of the world. When my coworkers ask what I did the previous weekend, I just say, “Aw, not much.” I leave out the part about experimenting with different whistles for hours on end and learning The Flowers of Redhill and trying to get my rolls just right by using the dah-blah-blah method. I’ve just mentioned my WhOA obsession to my boyfriend of six months, and he’s cool with it, so I might keep around awhile longer
I haven’t ventured much into Eb yet as it’s a bit shrill for me. I have a Susato VSB in Eb, haven’t played it much, but liked it what little I did play it. A lot of folks on the board like Eb, so I may have to play around with it.
If your boyfriend doesn’t stay cool with your whistling, you could always trade up for a low mileage English model, slight damage from a previous careless owner but still serviceable, and very cheap to run.

Actually, CJ, the folks who hang out in the chat room developed a C&F matchmaking site (to be known as Chiff & Kissles). There was a questionnaire (VERY funny, indeed) which would have been submitted and matches made by the ..um..matchmakers. No guarantees made. It never saw the light of day, however…I think it may still be lurking in Lark’s computer memory somewhere.
