yesterday i went to the music store and got a feadog D
which some of you suggested, the only whistles available are feadog D C
and generation D C G.. so i got a feadog
the C are a bit sharp.. and theres soo much airy sound.. 
a bit dissapointed 
i thought it sounded like a recorder, .. sigh.. 
you’ll get the hang of it.
(or perhaps it needs tweaking?)

Keep trying. If you just started in on whistle, it may take you a little while to get the feel for it. We can do a lot with our mouths and pressure to make it more/less airy. On the other hand, if you thought that a Feadog sounded like a recorder (ie. a bad thing), I can only imagine that you will continue to be disappointed with the whistle. The Feadog is one of the least recorderesque whistles available.
Hmm. My encouragement slipped into discouragement there. What I’m meaning to say is that you shouldn’t be misled… if you want something that utterly sounds different than a recorder than whistle is not for you. If however you are simply displeased with the sound of the Feadog, I would recommend practicing for a bit longer - say a week or more - and if it still isn’t the tone that you are seeking, there are many other whistles out there to try… half the fun of playing whistles, really 
Also, if you have a friend that plays whistle, you may wish to have them play it to make sure that it is indeed up to snuff.

I wasn’t at all happy with my Feadog D, and didn’t do too well at tweaking it.
I ended up replacing the mouthpiece with a Mack Hoover Whitecap, and it has a great sound now. It’s also fairly quiet, so I can play it in my office without having my ears pierced by the upper second octave notes.

have FUN girl, and you just need some playing around for a while and THEN decide whether you like the whistle or not.
if not, decide why not…
you can have a look for other whistles then until you get the sound you like… heh, you will be spoiled for choice!
and no…whistles are NO r*******s they are completely different instruments!

Well, this was kind of my point. They really aren’t completely different instruments. Structurally and tonally, they are very similar - in the same family. And if she doesn’t like the sound of a recorder or wanted something that didn’t sound at all like a recorder, then she can get the best playing whistle in the world and she will be disappointed.

Lillian! I’ve been playing for about 2 weeks now, and I felt the same way about my Clarkes Original and Sweetone when I first got them, I wasnt too impressed right off the bat with the Original so I ordered a Sweetone, while waiting for the Sweetone to come in I played on my Original some more and started to like it. Now that I have the Sweetone in I play (try that is) the Original mostly still and love the sound of it, and I’m hoping the Sweetone will grow on me like that
Give it a couple weeks or so and see what happens
Just be careful when you start ordering new whistles… I have 2 on hand now and 3 more coming and I already see a couple more I think I might pick up…

yes erik, thats true I just meant, that the way they are built is just different, different fingering and the sound is different too.
it still is a wind instrument indeed and there are familiarities.

Feadog Cs can take a bit of getting used to. I love the Ds - especially the nickel ones. Actually, I have Feadog Cs in brass and nickel and the nickel one plays best. The Feadog D takes much less air than the C. Try blowing harder into the C and see how you get on.
Unlike a lot of the people here I find Feadogs beat Gens and Waltons (especially Waltons!) hands down.

Also, I thought I should add that they tweak of slightly pulling out the head can help the intonation of the whistle and flatten it a bit. You may wish to check the main C&F site to read about how to do this tweak.
