I can't remember who the artist was...

A long time ago I was looking through some book (of which I’ve forgotten the title) and there was a self-portrait (I’m almost positive that it was done in pencil or charcoal) by a woman and a quote from her that said something along the lines of “Death is always with me” or “I always work with death”.

The self-portrait was very somber and almost disturbing, and Im trying to find it again but I can’t remember her name.

I remember that she was American (or possibly British)…

I can see the portrait in my head as clear as day, but I don’t know the woman’s name and this is bothering me a great deal! :angry:

Anybody help me?

Do you mean that one lady who was in that one book? The one with the self portrait that may have been black and white or it may have been in color (colour)?

I’m trying to remember the quote, it had something to do with “death has chased me all my life” or something very similar to that. If I can remember it, I’m sure I can find the portrait. It’s like having a word on the tip of your tongue and not being able to say it/think of it.

How about Kathe Kollwitz? I know she’s neither American nor British but the medium and the death connection seem to fit.

Do you remember anything more about the girl?
Hair color, face shape, approximate age?
This might give us a BIT more to go on…

Apparently she’s German. I thought she was from, like Ohio or Missouri.

I agree that they’re haunting. After looking through some sites about her, I really like her art. Two artists who I like a whole whole lot and who each tended to paint or write about darker themed things in life were Frida Kahlo and Sylvia Plath. Käthe Kollwitz reminds me of both of them.
