Well, I found out today that my job which is technically part of work study at my school, I work as a custodian, is not going to be around at the end of this school year. Reason being, the Board of Ed decided that they did not have enough money to keep this particular work study program (my parents pay over $1200 per month im property tax) it is bs. So I was thinking maybe instead of working at a fastfood resturant ir the like, I could fulfil a dream of apprenticing with a Whistle (or Flute or Pipe) maker. So if there are any in the New Jersey/NY/PA area that would be willing to take me as an apprentice. I would be more than intrested. If you live father than an hour or so I would probably have stay with you. I would be able to work some of June, most of July, and possibly some of August. I know of a few that live not too far but please help me out here I know the actual details should probably be through PM or Email.
This would imply that said builders are actually making money at building, right (to even have a pittance to spare)?
D’oh!
Well, money is important but the skills to build any of the three insturments are also very important. I am doing it for both the money and the love. I need the cash, but would be willing to work for what the said maker could give me.
Indeed. All the whistle makers I know get very very little money from whistles. Most have other jobs or make other instruments. Whistle making is not very financially profitable.
Seth Gallagher lives in upstated NY, about 1/2hour or hour from NYC. He makes money…believe me. At least a 10 month waiting period, meaning he’s got a line, to pay thousands of dollars for pipes. Look him up on google and drop him an email.
I had forgotten about Seth I will email him now.
thank you for the info !
fear not ‘unseen’
not looking to steal a possible job hehe ![]()
I can’t pay anyone for an apprenticeship, but you (or anyone else here) is welcome to pay a visit for a day or so to see how I make whistles. No real secrets-- just some basic machining technique and a real love of making instruments.
Paul:
I’m assuming you’re located in NY…what part?
Paul,
i would love to take you up on your offer sometime ![]()
i’ll go ahead and extend the same shop-visit offer to anyone coming to long island. assuming you can see past the mess and walk through the 2’pile of wood shavings around the lathe  not that i have much to teach~
i mostly make native-american style flutes.. and a few bansuri, quena, shakuhachi(sorta),etc…
A small city called Cohoes-- right where the Mohawk River joins the Hudson. This is about 10 miles north of Albany, 150ish miles from NYC
I emailed Seth I got a no back. If i am ever going to be up by you Paul I will be sure to drop by.
