Hello to everyone!
I am yoe, from Cuba. I am 25 years old, i am in love with the flutes in general but i prefer the sound of the irish flute (and traditional Irish music too). I have a whistle and i love it to. I would like to have an Irish traditinal flute someday, but here in my country it is impossible to get one… I am ask if anyone can help me with that hope. I dont care if it is an old flute. i would like to have anyone… If you can help me please, let me know by here or my email: yoemichel@yahoo.com
Hello Yoe, and welcome! It’s great to see someone from Cuba here, and I hope we’ll hear lots from you.
Are you able to order things from other countries and have them mailed to you (or are you able to send payment to other countries)? I don’t really know what your regulations are. I assume trade with the US would be a problem, but if you could order one from Europe that might work.
Also, I’ve heard that there are wooden flutes used for some types of traditional Cuban music, and that they are basically the same type of flutes used for Irish music. Could you get one of those? It might sound a little different, but I would guess that at least an older one would have a very similar, if not identical, sound.
I play irish traditional music on a traditional irish flute, but i am also very interested in the traditional flute playing of cuba. I take it you have heard of the ‘charanga style’ of cuban flute playing? This style of playing is traditionally played on a wood flute. Perhaps there are some players in cuba you could talk to? Wow, it’s great stuff!
In any case, i am going to be travelling back and forth alot to mexico in the next year (monterrey and mexico city). So if there is some way i can help get a flute to you, let me know. I’d be happy to help. I know there are regular flights to Cuba from mexico city and, i think, monterrey.
Well, i know there is a traditional style to play the flute here, but i have not inquire about that so much. i heard of it but i was not sure about that. I will ask and enquire so much more now. … But i still prefer the Irish one… I guess it is possible to you to bring me one to mexico. I have some friends to leave there and he may send it to me or gieve it to me personaly if they travel to cuba. In any case we have to be in touch to know about your travel to mexico… After that i will send you the address of my friend…
Well, thank you very much for your help… I am ansious about having my own irish flute…
There is another possibility, and it is by mail. I received some whistle from England and was not any problem… You can use DHL..
Well, i guess it is time to go now. Thanks again and hope to know about you.

Hi, steven! and thank you for your reply…
There is so difficult for us to get things by Internet. There is no mecanism to get anything by it. We dont use any kind of credit cards or something like that… it is no way. It is sad but it is true.
Internet it is a privilegy to some people here and it is only to companies who have to work with it. I am talking now from my work… A normal peole does not have internet… Well i have to find another way to get what i hope and this is one of it… Thats wahy i ask some people who could help me on that…
I will ask about the cuban flute but i think the sound it is similar to a concert flute… I still prefer the Irish one… I would like to have one some day…
Well, thank you again for you reply and, please, let me know if you can help me.
Check the whistle board…Dale Wisely has left you a message about sending you a whistle.
For anyone wanting to learn Irish flute, starting with whistle makes a lot of sense, at least for the first couple of years. A lot can change in those years–by then, you will likely be able to order an Irish flute yourself.
However it comes to pass, I do wish you the best of luck with your music.
