Well . . . HE hasn’t, I have. Let’s not have all that raked up again! I loved the A but I wouldn’t have an Eb myself unless all my friends refused to tune down to B . . . .
What’s the “the elusive Clancy/Moloney” about? I thought Clancy’s Moloney set (which belonged to Sean Reid) was Bb.

I have thought that an A chanter would be a good idea if the design works well for the hands.
What is the lowest pitch the old makers made eg egan coyne etc. Bb or lower ?

I heard through the grapevine that Peter Hunter considers palo santo as one of the best woods for pipes.
I see you have a a few sets on that page.
Does it have any special qualities apart from from being ‘holy wood?’
It looks a different colour from the lignum Hunter chanter I owned.

Bflat is the lowest pitch I’m aware of in classic sets.
Palo Santo (the guaiacum species - there are other woods by that name) is lovely but like all lignum species trade is now restricted.

Sam - Why did the customer want an Eb chanter? To go with an Eb flute?
I think G is the lowest key of the Uillleann pipes or is it the Pastrol pipes, Ronan Brown has a G chanter made by Peter Hunter,or something like that? so the story go’s, Sam will correct me if I’m wrong, all the best.
With an Eb he could play along with Dervish and Altan

Yes, Ronan Browne does own a Hunter G chanter.
I also own a G chanter and let me tell you, if you have trouble playing a C chanter because of the reach, imagine the strain you’ll get trying to play a G. 
If I remember right, I seem to recall either Peter or Davy S. (I know I used his name… Lord don’t smite me) stating on their websites that they made a chanter in E as well. That would be great! The people that I play with at church are always playing in A or E. An E chanter would be unique and probably a cool sound on the pipes. Any adventurous pipe makers out there?

Well Joseph, you are very tall, you might be able to play an A chanter without too much trouble.
I would think that a well made A would sound great. If we could convince Geoff Wooff to make one it that would be great.

thanks for the advice. I hadn’t considered getting an A chanter. Yes, please Geoff!!! Hopefully the stretch should be do-able. I guess being 6’7" does come in handy for more than dunking a basketball and hitting your head on ceiling fans…

the a chanter mentioned is a well made chanter it is a one off an original.
sam did all the maths and used peters original flat chanter design.
listen to the sound i never heard any makers chanter with so much tone.
saying that geoff woof would do any beter than this is a very tall order

Peter did make an E but wouldn’t make another, it had no balls to it. The A chanter is essentially a stretched Coyne B, like Ronan’s G (which incidentally he feels is happier nearer G#).
The Eb is to play with a fiddle, it’s a good fun chanter to play - lively. It’s based on a concert chanter - the Hunter E that Peter didn’t like is based on a narrow D design.
