Recently there was some discussion about sharp High B’s. Here is a reed I made. this is a new file…the one I initially posted was oversqueezed

No tape was used here. Although Garage Band was used to record it… which’ll explain the compressor squashing the the volume.

Hey, sounds good to me. When are you available to make a cedar or spruce reed for my Froment chanter?

… It’s dead on! no tape…

perhaps I shouldn’t have worked out right before recording last time?! 😉

ps the diminuendo is the Garage Band built in compressor squeezing the file… (hardly my favourite DAW to use, but it was quick)..

Its better than before ,but its still sharp. The B should be flat by 16 cent.

1st-mine shows it in tune. SO…get a new tuner. THEN _stop_ using a tuner!

2nd -post a file of your playing…

then we can engage…

…actually, strike that…

Whats the point in asking for opinions if you are going to get upset when you get one.

'tis presumptuous to infer my state of elation…

if you use your ears (in relation to lets say a concertina), you can hear this is a bit under because I’m under- compensating I reckon. …but under pressure of the drones …'tis up to the player to make the judgment call via their control of the bag..

This stuff is never, has never been put under the microscope (just check all the recording we know and love), save in this hypercritical totally piper-esque forum 🙂 What would Ennis’, Flynn’s etc. playing be sans that sharp B? I wouldn’t trade it for a 16c flat b, ever!

Remember, it’s always better to see sharp, than to b flat!

someone must check into that “16c flat 2nd octave” theory…

For consonance with the drones, B should ideally be well flat of the tuner in both octaves. In reality, it’s often barely there in the first, and can be coaxed up to the drones, and in the second octave it’s slightly sharp of equal temperament if you’re lucky. It can be well sharp of ET as O’Flynn’s is at times, and we pipers have gotten used to it.

BUT it’s very nice to be able to hang on to a high B without winceing. The soundfile KP posted is much better than most.

Thanks for that Bill.

Regardless of where the maker puts the B hole; my personal pref. is not to have a 1st oct B that is too saggy (flat). I’ll take on that wee rub w/ the drones (or tape it down if need be) and have it a little high in the 2nd (like we’re all used to). As long as it’s not screaming sharp, perturbing into the the land of C nat., .

In addition, for a concert chanter (again my own feelings on this), I end up doing different sorts of performing than with the flat set e.g. w/guitar, sessiuns, concertina, recording session. A flat 1st octave B can be difficult for all parties to hear when playing w.others.

On one chanter I owned, at a time when I was performing often, I had the maker make the B “in tune” (the 1st oct). When I used the drones, I’d tape it.

No worries… and no one feinted (or got fired) due to saggyness of the B.
