Humphrey Owners who also own Syns

Have a Humphrey NB high D … which I play a lot when I play a High whistle. However, it is really too small for my hands (diameter). I would consider the wide bore but have heard that my neighbors a few miles down the road might think it was a wee bit too loud.

I have read a lot of good things about the Syn on this site. How does the size compare … air requirements … purity of sound and ease of playing the second octave? Any other comparrisons you might want to mention.

Thanks,

Jim

completely different animals altogether…

humphrey–more like a really good generation, not much back pressure, sweet second octave, medium loud, not as aggressive playing, not as wide bore

syn–more backpressure, louder second octave & takes more pressue, more aggressive playing, definately wider bore

My Syn seems pretty balanced between the octaves.

My Humphrey NB Stealth D shipped today , so it’ll be a few days before I can do a comparison.

This may be a slight design change. I have a Syn I got about a year and a half back from Gaelic Crossings, and a newer Syn set I got last fall.

Very similar head designs, but the older one definitely requires more push (and gives more volume) above 2nd octave G, with the biggest jump between 2nd octave A and B.

I’d write it off as normal hand-crafted variation, but I’ve seen several others here on the board remark about the same thing.

The Syn isn’t a quiet whistle at all, but it doesn’t have quite the ear-piercing ability of the Susato, either.

Nice fat barrel, though, and rather heavy. It feels good under my fingers, but when I go from the Syn to my Serpent Polly or Walton’s Mellow D (similar OD) the difference in weight is very noticable.

Yeah, I guess I’m talking about the original Syn  , the more recent ones are better balanced in the second octave.
