Humphrey Eb tube

Noticed that my NB D head will work with a Eb tube and I am thinking of ordering one. Would appreciate comments on this setup from anyone who has it.

Thanks,

Jim

I’ve got the Eb tube for my Humphrey, and I think it’s great, although I don’t play it as much as the D. If you like the D, you’ll like the Eb. It’s brighter, you can play it very fast. My only problem with it is that the sound can be a bit too penetrating when I play it in small rooms with hard surfaces, and one of my ears doesn’t seem to like that.

It’s also just a great Eb tube, you can put other heads on it and to my ear it sounds better than the Gen Eb tube–more in tune, and the higher notes sound better. You’ll need to use teflon tape, though, it’s a smaller diameter than a Gen Eb tube. I use my Humphrey Eb tube more with my O’Briain Improved head than with the Humphrey head, the lower notes on the O’Briain are a little less delicate on an Eb than on a D tube, and I like the sound. I think for $15 it’s well worth it.

Appreciate the reply … will be ordering one

Just a quick note to mention that Lyrick has older tubes that do not have the slight flare in the mouthpiece end like my current tubes.
It may still be possible to use my tubes with some other mouthpieces, but the flared end might crack cheapie mouthpieces… the plastic used to make them isn’t flexible like acetal.

Gary,

Will my head fit on the current Eb tubes and is the volume about the same as the D tube?

Thanks,

jim

I’m pretty sure your tube was made after I started adding the flared end.
Check the fit of the mouthpiece on the bell end of the tube and see if it’s looser… if so, yours is flared, if not, I could always make you an unflared tube.
The volume of an Eb tube isn’t really louder than a D tube with the same mouthpiece, but the higher pitch does make it seem to be.

I also have the Eb tube and love it. I play the Eb as much or more than I do the D.
