How to play triplets of the same note?

I am wondering how to best play triplets of the same note: e.g. “(3AAA”, “(3GGG” etc. in ABC notation. Since all 3 notes are to be played in a single 1/4 note time, do you play an accelerated roll (e.g. “(3A{B}A{G}A” ) or triple-tong it (ti-gi-di type of thing) ?

I triple tongue them. Sometimes for variety, I’ll drop the middle note.

Tongeing is easy, but I prefer getting the fingers involved - tends to fit the feel of the music best in most places and avoids the staccato tendency that used to be a problem for me.

Sometimes you can just play a single note. That doesn’t work in all cases. Devil In The Kitchen needs to have each of those b’s played. I struggled with this tune for a long time until I learned to do the glottal stop. That works. With my limited finger dexterity there’s only one other way, and that’s to replace the middle b with a c# by lifting the finger, but that changes the tune too much for my taste.

I’m trying to reduce my use of tonguing, and have spent time consciously working through that situation. (It wasn’t happening for me when I was unconscious). One way I do it is to insert a roll or cut in the middle: 1, roll, 3. The finger action of the roll or cut eliminates the need for the tongue to touch down. Hard to explain in words, but there are several good ways to do it. To me it sounds much more traditional and interesting than triple-tonguing.

I definatly roll except on very rare occasions.
