How to get my kids to listen to "Trad" Irish music

Yeah really…no wonder my kids are listening to Metallica’s version of Whiskey in the Jar!!!

Don’t blame US. We’re obviously just as traumatised as yer kids are.

Izzarina, it’s easy! Just tell 'em they’re not allowed, they’re not old enough!

You know, the Jolly Beggarman has some pretty good luck in those lyrics–are you sure that’s not the reason your kid likes it?

There you go.

And keep the Trad CDs under lock and key. When you get “caught” playing 'em, shut everything down in a huff and ask your kids wouldn’t they like to hear some nice Megadeth?

Gasp!

He is in the blush of youth at only 16. How would he know of anything like that?!?! :astonished:

One of the Dubliners most loved tracks. Nowhere near one of their best but without a doubt, one of their best known.

Way back in the day, a pre-stadium rock band from Dublin did a version.

Thin Lizzy went on from that to become the U2 - I swore I would never mention that crowd  - of their day on the strength of Whiskey in the Jar. A huge hit on both sides of the Irish Sea. The critics at the time, moreso the Irish ones, mentioned the Dubliners version and that in itself brought many people into the fold via the Dubliners.
Some years later the Dubs and the Pogues did the Irish Rover. Another generation of people into the fold.

The Dubliners, for whatever various reasons, have always been there as an introduction to Irish music.

Metallica I never liked at all, at all.

Break out the Dubliners albums Izzy…then start them on the Dylan stuff.

Slan,
D.

Verily, verily, I say unto you!

Oh, so it’s Jacobean now. Wise guy, eh?

The Dubliners. All the introduction to Celtic folk (and more) that one could need. I’ve got tickets to see them in Aylesbury in October! For a while there I thought I was gonna have to bite the flying bullet and go to Dublin this year.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Dublin - but I SO hate flying.

Dubh, is the Luke Kelly statue reality yet? They should put him near Paddy Kavanagh.

I know the Clancys are big in the USA (and rightly so), but what about the Dubliners and the Fureys? Do they really get as overlooked as it seems.

Jaysus. The Dubs have more than 40 years of great songs, great musicians and great personalities. They have more character and colour than most of the others combined. Drink, controversial records, members passing away tragically young… The Dubs ROCK.

Am I ranting?

My musical heroes:
Django
The Dubliners
Jimi
Tom Waits
Rory Gallagher

Am I ranting AND off topic? Must be the Guinness.

Want to get kids into Irish folk? Try humour. Try the Dubliners:
Sick Note
Darby O’Leary
7 Drunken Nights
Finnegan’s Wake
etc etc etc…

Want to get kids into whistle? Show 'em John Sheahan playing ‘Swallow’s Tail’ on the Dubs live DVD (or at a gig!).

Want to get 'em into Irish banjo or mandolin? Show 'em Barney in full flow…

I suspect I’m tipsy  . Time for bed.

Why are we speaking English on an ITM thread?

No, really… time fr bed.

G’night all.

Surely we should all be speaking French.

Who is Fr. Bed?

And upon this thoughtless, empty stone I pearch.

Be it the circumstance of youth’s sweet breath I solemnly await, or upon the suddenly drawn breath of impatience’s flowing liquid eyebrow

It only seems to seek, to discover, to anchor my jaw, and, like the rhetorcial sorry ass, senseless dead dying bone white artifact… My spirit is undecided.

I actually do listen to the Dubliners quite often. They are definitely one of my favorites. As is Dylan. Unfortunately, I think that I went about it absolutely wrong. I didn’t forbid them from listening to it (as has been recommended), and so they have no interest. Although, I tend to think that eventually they’ll come to liking it. They’ve been surrounded by it all of their lives, and it’s been my experience that people tend to go back to their roots, so to speak, as they get older (and wiser!), at least to a certain extent.

Hey, Dub, U2 also did a version of Whiskey in the Jar. That’s the other version that my iPod wielding children have. It’s a live version, I think. Just wanted to let you know about that…I know how much you love them

Oh, and for the record, I don’t think that the wee Izzy’s of the house really do like Metallica in general (at least I hope not…if they do I’ve done something horribly wrong and should be flogged for it :boggle: ). I think they found out about this one song of theirs, and thought that I would approve since it’s “Irish”. So I suppose I should be happy that they do try to gain my approval once in a while, even if it is by listening to Metallica’s version of Whiskey in the Jar :stuck_out_tongue:

I think that the transition from Metallica to The Dubliners might be a bit of a stretch for young Metal fans. I have brought a few mates with similar tastes on the journey to trad, mainly via bands like Horslips and albums like Davy Spillane’s Atlantic Bridge. I think any transition material is gonna need a few electric guitars in the mix but it might be best to casually play some fusion-ish stuff like Flook! and let them find their own way. Live gigs make the transtion easier also, if you can manage to drag them along to a Solas gig or something. If your kids are typical teens, your recommendation would probably be the death-knell for any artist  .

It might be no harm to casually mention that 60’s folkies Sweeney’s Men and Annie Briggs were major influences on Led Zepplin and esp Jimmy Page. Have a listen to songs like Going to California on Led Zepplin 4. Also:
