How not to remove wax from a fipple

I had a gen in Bb that I’d put some wax in because I hadn’t any poster putty. Later, I got some putty and it was so much easier to work with I decided to pull the wax out of the Bb. I figured the fipple would be ok to 200 degrees or so, and beeswax would melt by then so into the oven it went.

Big mistake. The fipple completely deformed. However, it is wax free!

8-(

EU oven is it?

Nope - US actually, set to 225F. it didn’t melt, just warped enough that it will never be used for it’s original purpose again.

 it was a Celsius Fahrenheit joke

water boils at 212 if ya let it cool a bit it is usually fairly safe

oven thermometers (the old spring ones) are designed to be fairly accurate at 350ish (or whatever temp you adjust them to) but they are off the farther you get from there.

Sorry - my sense of humor will take an hour or so to grow back. I HATE it when I do something stupid.

I was using the digital readout on the oven itself - you actually set the temp in 5 degree increments - so it should have been within 10 deg or so.

If I’d have used boiling water, as you suggest, I’d be repacking a nice clean fipple about now. Grrrrr…

Anyone know where a generation Bb can be purchased near Milwaukee, WI?

the readout is digital and maybe the sensor is too

it doesn’t mean that the sensor’s accuracy is consistent across it’s range

I suppose one of those homilies about learning more from our failures than from our triumphs isn’t gonna be appreciated right now…

Sorry for your loss :frowning: . Get a new one from Jerry Freeman and you won’t have to do anything to it. It’ll be even better and then you won’t mind so much.

Too little too late out of me, I suppose, but I just want to mention how much more viscerally satisfying it might have been stabbing and scraping at it with a pointed stick. The non-melty factor of this aside, of course.
