Does anybody have an idea of the value of a used keyless Eamonn Cotter Pratten, obviously played a whole lot but still quite playable?
I’ve located one on consignment in a music store here in St. Louis. The price of a new one would help. I’ve searched and people didn’t know
the last time it was discussed, but perhaps someone knows now. I’m not going to call Cotter, just hoping someone knows. The seller wants
800 dollars.
That seems fair to me. A friend of mine sold his Cotter a few years back for $1000.
That seems a bit high to me. I’m not sure what a new keyless Pratten Cotter goes for these days, but I imagine it’s somewhere around $900-$1000, especially with the strong dollar.
I have a keyless Cotter built years ago, maybe around 2002. Love the tone and character, but it rarely gets played with my 3-keyed Murray and Keyless Olwell in the mix. I’m thinking of selling it soon. I was going to shoot for $500 for mine. Even though it plays great, with good intonation, it’s a bit roughly built compared to his later flutes (I have a 6-keyed e-flat, built probably in 2006 or so, that is much cleaner). Also, mine needs to be re-corked (I temporarily am using thread on it, which works great but probably isn’t the best way to go long term). So I’d say you should be able to offer more like $650 - $700 for that flute if it’s clean with no cracks and otherwise in good condition. On the other hand, if you’ve tried it out and think it’s a winner, it might be worth just paying the full price.
I think his flutes have tone with a lot of character, great intonation, and play nicely in both octaves. Even though it’s less of a “cannon” than my Olwell, I think it has more character and reediness than the Olwell. It does take some time and work to get that nice tone, though.
Best of luck,
Vince
Thanks. The end cap is missing. I guess I’ll go low if I go at all.
