My (adopted) father has traced his family back to Ireland mid 1800’s. Unfortunately they’ve gotten lost in all the Walshes there. My cousin has said he’s going to go over there and do some serious research and maybe we’ll be able to go back a little farther.
My mother’s side of the family, I can go back to my great-grands, but the rest are lost in the mists of Lithuania and Poland. Names have been changed so much it’s really hard to trace.
My biological dad is somewhat the same story, though I don’t think anybody’s tried too hard, maybe we’d have a little more luck (in his case it’s Poland and Germany that the ancestors are lost in).
Well it depends on which line we are talking about. On my fathers side I can go back to Kent in the 1400s. On my mothers side I go back to Germany in the 1500s. For my wife I can go back to about 1210 in Cornwall. My Irish side is about 1830 in Cork and also in Limerick. The fun is in the search.
I’ve been able to trace my roots only as far back as my great-great-(?)great grandfather on my mother’s side. At one time during the raj, he was director of the governor’s band in India. I have a photo of him from an earlier time in his life looking very distinguished with his flowing beard, turban, and embroidered chogha, astride his beautiful Marwari horse.
I have no Irish ancestors, although when I was four years old, I insisted I was from Ireland (I must have seen a movie I liked set in Ireland), and wanted to go “home.” My feeling of familiarity with Ireland, and longing to “return” there gradually diminished, and all but disappeared by the time I was ten, but I’ve remained interested in everything Irish, including the music. I’ve never been to Ireland, but I’d love to visit there.
Some may doubt this, but I am a direct descendent of Mohamed, although I could have chosen another person with children and grandchildren from about the time in human history. Guy Murcie in his book, “The Seven Mysteries of Life” explains mathematically that with cross-cultural interbreeding, it only takes about 50 generations for every human on the planet to be blood relatives.
Yeah, that’s the thing about geneology. I do find it interesting, and I enjoy knowing where some of my roots go, but it’s always struck me as such an arbitrary decision. Which line do you trace? When do you turn right, or left? The endlessness of the possibilities is daunting.
With the geneology stuff, unless I can find something more than birth, marriage, death dates, it’s pretty dry. That’s what started my searching again. I found a new book on the Frankie Silver hanging and so have gotten the bug again.
