How do you pronounce...

Baidin Fheilimi. This is the first song on the Mad for Trad instruction CD and I’m starting from the begining. I’d like to know how to pronounce the songs I’m playing.

Jon

Although not exact, this pronunciation is close, I think:

BAH-jean EYE-limay

That’s pretty close - I would say Baw-jean EYE-lami would be how I would pronounce it.

There is an audio clip of the song at this site.

Slan,
D.

WhistlingGypsy, after hearing the clip dubhlinn (thanks, dubhlinn) provided, it appears your pronunciation is the correct one. It’s the way I pronounced the song title too *( http://www.zshare.net/audio/baidin-fheidhlimidh-philips-little-boat-irish-folk-song-mp3.html ), until I saw the “BAH-jean EYE-limay” phonetic pronunciation on the Internet a few days ago.

*Admittedly not-so-hot multitrack recording of me playing it on my whistle, fiddle, hammer dulcimer, harp and cello.

I had to learn to sing the song for my Irish class, and to me the pronunciation would be closer to baw-djean eye-lahmee, if that phoenetic spelling makes sense. the d is just pronounced very slightly almost as an emphasis to the j sound. very similar to the way sinead sings it in the clip linked above. it’s a nice song and easy to memorize as it’s somewhat repetative.

cheers,
Sara

The pronunciation depends on what part of Ireland
you come from!! In the southwest it would be:

baw-deen aisle-a-me

The J or G sound in Baidín, is more Galway and Donegal

in Dundalk I was taught :
baw-jean Ell-Ah-mee

Yup.

All correct. But as it 's a Donegal song, the earliest efforts at transcription are closest.

Donegal Irish is weird to the rest of us, but trying to imagine/fantasise about how the lovely Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (of Altan) might pronounce it, I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out as “BADGE-een EYE-lih-mee” or even “BWADGE-een”.

Just bought a couple of missing additions to the Altan collection on a trip home yesterday, so will listen carefully for clues.

And it means “Phelim’s little boat”

Do you have an audio/video clip available?

hmm… I have it as a real player file currently, so maybe I could email it? I really need to find out whose recording it is as well.

I was thinking of a clip with you singing it. But I would be interested in another clip as well, if you have it.

uhhh, no. you definitely don’t want that
