I have ordered a Hoover Whitecap from Mack. (just the white fipple)
I am trying to decide what body to attach to the Whitecap. What tubes have you found works the best?
I own an oak “D” and I was thinking I would remove its fippple with the Whitecap. I am trying to create a very pure, sweet whistle that is very easy on the ears, creating my ideal practice whistle.
I would apreciate any suggestions,

I did the same with a Feadog, and the result was great. The sound is quite sweet across both octaves. It’s pretty quiet, and easy to play. I can even push it a bit in the lower octave. It’s definitely my best for practice when the rest of the family is around, but it’s worth playing any time.
In fact, I’m just now ordering another Whitecap for an Oak that I haven’t had much luck tweaking. I think others here have mentioned that they’ve had good luck with the Oak tubes.
One thing to watch out for is if the fit seems tight, don’t just force it onto the tube, because it may turn out to be very hard to adjust it later. Instead, try sanding the part of the tube that goes into the Whitecap, ending with superfine, then apply a little vaseline or other grease. You want it to be firm, but not immovable. You might even want to sand a bit inside the Whitecap, which has a brass insert.
In my case, I sort of lost patience after getting pretty close, and went ahead and forced it on the last quarter inch or so. I got it into the right position, but then couldn’t move it. A friend worked on it with hot water and managed to detach the plastic from the brass insert, which remained on the tube. Being a jeweler, he had a variety of tools at his disposal, and managed to finally separate the insert from the tube. Now I just need to do a little more work before I reassemble it.
I seem to recall that you can send the tube to Mack and get him to fit it for you.
I have two, one on a Acorn tube and the other on a Clare two-piece tube. Both produce a sound like you want, pure and clear, if a bit quiet.
I find both to be ideal whistles for both practice and when I’m playing just for myself in a a more comntemplative mood.
I used mine with a Feadóg and Clare brass 2 piece tubes and both worked equally well.
I have a whitecap on an Oak D and love it.
It’s just about my favorite whistle. Right behind my Burke pro session.
It’s quiet, but not too much so, and it has a pure sweet sound.
I’m thinking about sending a Generation Eb and my Oak C to Mack so he can add whitecaps to those as well. He does great work!

I bought my whitecap to use on homemade whistles .. copper pipe type . they did great .. tried it on a high dollar pipe .. was louder and “maybe” better .. I still use it on that one.
Mack’s whitecap seems to improve most everything it is used with .. at least the ones I have tried. But, I haven’t tried them all yet so ur mileage may vary.

How hard is it to put the $20 Whitecap on the 2 piece Clare? Does it fit easily, or did you have to work at it?
Also, how long did it take for your whitecap to reach you after you ordered it?

I just yesterday received a Whitecap on a C Gen body.
I’ve an earlier version of the Whitecap, with a brass body, as well. The problem is, when I moved to a different house, the body got damaged in transit, irreparably. I’d also be interested to know what bodies would fit it. The only other tubular body / plastic mouthpiece whistle I have is a Bb Gen, which is clearly too large.
The best way to do it is to send Mack your tube and have him fit it. The other option is to trade tubes with him. I wanted a whitecap on my Oak tube. He had an Oak tube so he sent me that one fitted with a whitecap and I sent him my Oak tube.
The result is a super whistle. Very sweet.

My Mack Whitecap is on a Nickel Generation D tube and it is just fantastic. With it practicing, especially breath control, becomes something special. If I had to select only one whistle of my many whistles, it would be my Mack Generation D!

I just sent Mack my whistle - that way I didn’t even have to get the stupid head off it myself. Unlike some makers, Mack does not work months or years ahead, He only takes those orders in a month that he feels he can fill in that month. In my experience, anyway, it didn’t take long at all.
1). I’ve had 3 Whitecap heads, and multiple Clare bodies. The Clare bodies varied more in size than the Whitecap heads…but my representation was rather small. My Whitecap fit my nickel (green top) Clare as well, but it was rather loose. Clare whistles come with a bit of a “grating” near where you slide the mouthpiece on, for that reason, though.
2). Not more than a few days.
It did not take long, but it just seemed long because of all good things people on the forum were saying about his Whitecap whistles,
And they were right!
the Oak tubes have a bit of a flair on the end, which needs to be removed or it likely won’t fit straght from Mack. I’d recommend trading tubed to get a good fit.
I have a whitecap on a Gen brass and on an Oak. The Gen is a tiny bit quieter and sweeter while the Oak has a bit more breathiness. We’re talking tiny degrees here.
It took mine about 3 weeks from the time I said go ahead. You will need to send Mack a bank check or money order. He does not take credit cards. You will receive it during the month that you ordered it providing you send payment promptly.
Worth the wait.

I’ve moved mine back and forth between an Oak body and a clare 2 piece body. Until recently, I would have told you I preffered the Oak w/whitecap best, but recently I’ve moved it back to the clare and I prefer that now. It’s tight on the Oak, a tad loose on the clare (scotch tape worked best on the oak to bridge the gap - I then used cork grease on the tape, and it’s perfect!
What could be more fun than having such a great fipple to move around from body to body?
If you’re just buying the mouthpc, you should let Mack know what barrel(s) the mouthpc is going to be used with. There are slight differences in diameter for the various “Gen-type” brands.
He can then let you know which brands are likely to fit the same whitecap.
