Why was that in my 9th grade literature textbook? I still don’t understand, but I still remember it.
edit: Oh, here’s why:
I don’t recall the literary reference, but I remember learning about Mumbo Jumbo when studying Mungo Park’s adventures in Africa.

I came across it in a very old textbook a few years back. Yes, it was racist all right, but the rhythms were hypnotic. I’d seen references to in various places. The only one I remember was the book “MAS*H” where they quote it during a drunken debauch.
The nearest we came to it in any of our textbooks was “The Daniel Jazz”:
Darius the Mede was a King and Wonder
His eye was proud and his voice was thunder.
He kept bad lions in a monstrous den.
He fed those lions on Christian Men.
Daniel was the butler, swagger and swell,
He ran up stairs. He answered the bell.
And he would let in whoever came a’calling:
Saints so holy, scamps so appalling…
We had a bunch of white-crowns this year for some reason.
