Unfortunately, Russia keeps a Soviet practice of racial discrimination in ID’s. The most common “dokument” is called “passport” eventhough it allows one only to travel inside the country.
There, after the Citizenship line (i.e. Russia, or some Autonomous Republic like Tatarstan, etc.), there still is a compulsory mention of Nationality. Take your pick of Russian, Ukrainian, Latvian, Georgian, Tatar, Jew, Czeczen etc. (quoted in the approx. order of Soviet scale of decreasing prestige…)
I’m glad to hear some react by humorous resistance.
Sorry, folks, I know I ain’t funny here. Russian reality just isn’t Rivendell. Here’s some funny (?) stuff.

Yesterday , at a Press Conference in Europe concerning the extension of EEC, the journalist from French Le Monde (newspaper just as respected as the London Times) asked a question to Mr Putin :
“Do you think with the use of fragmenting bombs in Grozny you’re going to eliminate terrorists by wiping out the whole population ?”
The answer flared :
“Well, if you sympathize with extremist Muslims, why don’t you get circumcized ? Come to Moscow, we have free practice of every religion. We have excellent hospitals, we’ll be glad to make this operation (etc.)”
The translator lamely stuttered, skipped all the shocking stuff. Maybe because he happened to be one of these censoring diplomatic interpreters; I suspect he was un familiar with the Russian term for that little ectomy. So only fluent Russian speakers got the answer, and only Russian press mentioned the flare.

Racial discrimination, nerve gas (among others), mass torture, sniping at children, provocation, assassinations, concentration camps of an unheard of cruelty, accumulation of mass-destruction weapons…
What a beautiful ally for the “Crusade” saber-rattling against hooligan states.

If you want a clearing house link to an endless number of those kinds of links, check out fark.com
Where do you think I got the ebay link to a Russian MIG fighter and a space suit? Caution, there are also links to porn sites, so parents, be advised. The rest of you, don’t click on those links at work.

I think I copied that link from from a Netscape browser because my IE browser freezes the whole computer if a flash site comes up and I haven’t taken the time to fix it.

Anyway, some sites have sniffers that customize the view for different browsers, so, darn it, it might not come up for you.

I found it by going to Google (http://www.google.com) and asking it for “jedi knights census”.

Ah…and there be Dragons in Vermont..

I say there be many mythical creatures/beings that exist that we don’t know about or are aware of.

That’s right! Who cares as long as they come along for the ride on our “War on Terrorism”?

Kim, I’m afraid that I am sadly under par for Elvish translation…

And I’m even an Elf!! lol

“I thought I had strayed into a dream.”

nauthannen v. pret. ‘I thought’; cf. nautha- ‘conceive; *think’

ned prep. ‘in’.

ôl n. ‘dream’.

reniannen v. ‘I strayed’; cf. renia- ‘stray’

Neat! hmm… So where did you learn that from??

Ardalambion is a good place to start with Elvish linguistics. I don’t think it claims to be run by Hobbits, though.

P.S. It’s a website in case that wasn’t clear.

Whistling Elf, did you make up that poem about Rivendell?

I read the Trilogy, but not The Hobbit, so maybe I missed something somewhere.

Kai- yes, indeed, I wrote that verse. It is actually the first verse of lyrics to a song I wrote in praise of Rivendell.

The Complete version looks like this (excerpts are used from the LOTR Trilogy):

I wish to return to Rivendell
Where peace and Elven folk do dwell.
For I’ve journeyed far through Hill and Dale,
To the East and West of which tales do tell,
But none is so fair as my Rivendell.

A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!
To the East and West of which tales do tell.
Silivren penna míriel
Elbereth A! Gilthoniel
And none is so fair as my Rivendell.

Totally off Topic, but have you seen the Extended version yet??? If you havent you are missing out.Its almost like watching a whole new movie.

I have!!! I ordered it back in October, got it Wednesday and have watched it 3 times. It’s FABULOUS! Better than the theater release. I doubt I’ll ever watch my regular version again.

The score for The Two Towers comes out on December 10th.

 I can’t wait!!
