So I’ve been practicing with my Clarke’s Original for the last week or so, using the tutorial @ thewhistleshop and then some with a copy of The whistler’s pocket companion book while I waited for my Sweetone and a copy of Bill Ochs to come in. I finally got it in today! YAY! pull it out go through a few notes and… hmm… its kinda buzzy, it sounds very similiar to my Original just it has a squeek like weird noise ( very discriptive eh? ). Its not breathy (I think) its just a small buzz underneath the tone. Wonder where they are hiding the bee
So I thought maybe I could make it tuneable and loosen the head up and such, that didnt work really. I’ve read through some of the sections for making adjustments but I’d figure maybe I should ask and make sure this just isnt a characteristic of the Sweetone and I’m trying to tune out something that isnt there.
But in the meantime I’m finding myself enjoying my Original much more.
I have a nickle plated Clare on the way now too. And I’m trying to decide if I should pick up a Jerrytone, but after this Sweetone I’m thinking about picking up a tweaked shaw instead? Any suggestions?
There is a bit of “reediness” to the timbre of Sweetones, even when tweaked. If this is what you’re hearing, I don’t think a tweaked Sweetone will make you happy. I would recommend a tweaked Shaw instead, which has a much more professional and authentic “pure drop trad” conical rolled metal tinwhistle sound.
I think reediness is the perfect discription. I’m still very new to this so thanks for the clarification there! I’ve been playing with it some more and I’m finding I dont dislike the sound of it, its just different from what I expected I think.
i disagree with jerry. if you are going to pick up a tweaked shaw, first send him the sweetone you just got and let him tweak that too. the shipping back is the same for one or 2 light whistles, and i think you will like the effect of the tweaking. the cost from jerry for tweaking the sweetone will not be high. since you are working with lower end instruments, it is nice to have a choice. i alternate the 2 and find it makes playing much more enjoyable.
