Being new to whistling, I’m just a little curious… I’ve heard of an arrow shaft whistle (Mack Hoover)… but does anyone know of whistles being made from gun barrels? Know of any other interesting things that whistles have been made from?

I have tried the following with mixed results:
ski pole, fishing rod, down tube from a hanglider, battens, plastic road marker tubes (plenty of these around in the winter), bike handle bar, and the tip of a fibreglass antenna.
Anything that I can fit to a Gen, Sweet or Howard low D plastic head is worth a try.

most gun barrels are hardened steel and they tend to be very thick walled with a small bore, a barrel from a 12 gauge shotgun might make for a good low whistle though. you’d have to turn it down a bit to make the wall an even thickness, most shotgun barrels get thicker the closer you get to the chamber. maybe I’ll check with my gunsmith and see if he has any old barrels with a cracked chamber that he wants to get rid of.
mmmm…I have certainly come accross whistles made by gunsmiths but not actually out of guns.
Bloody good idea tho’ if you ask me

Steve Harper’s a gunsmith but Harper whistles are “normal” though not to my taste.
Blowing into a single barrel shotgun APPARENTLY 
sounds convincingly like a horn and has been used for summoning gundogs (hopefully not to clear up the potential mess…).

most shotgun barrels are smoothbore, a steel whistle would be a bit lighter than a brass one.

Well, it’s kind of going the other way, but at a show a couple weeks ago, I used a low A barrel to shoot mini-marshmallows at a kid who kept shooting a marshmallow gun at me. She was pretty surprised!

I tried to make one from a push-rod from a 4.0 liter V6 wrangler engine. It was a miserable failure.

Zubivka, I find it interesting that you find any conversation about firearms obscene. Even something as innocent as turning a gun barrel into a musical instrument. I thought that would be something that even you could appreciate. Sort of a turning your sword into a plow analogy.

Although a lot of people feel this way (including my stepmother, a woman I love and respect) it’s a mindset I’ve never quite understood, perhaps because I was raised in country where “hunting season” was a normal part of the yearly round.
I grew up eating game - duck, goose, pheasant, quail, and, above all, venison. And the one childhood favorite I still miss is my grandmother’s venison cutlets with pan gravy. And safe gunhandling was learned from my grandfather (a much harsher critic, because he loved us, than any other instructor would have dared to be). To me guns are tools, like any other. And the responsibility for their use (or misuse) rests squarely on their owner.
And one of the most popular things for out-of-country visitors is taking them to the shooting range (this reminds me - I promised daugter #1 I’d take her to the range again). From a slightly overprotective father’s viewpoint I love the way her boyfriends react when they find out she keeps her best pistol targets on display in her room.
Exactly, a gun is simply just a tool. Murder is not found in the tool, but in the heart and mind of the individual.
Speaking of venison, my little brother downed his first buck last week..it is going to be good eating this winter!
Ok, agreed. You’re right in that it’s better than reverse. Also agreed shotguns are a different category–when not destined to riot control. Gaming is ok with me when fair game.
