I think because it’s slick and goes into the socket easy, but actually is applying a lot of pressure on the socket.
Dave Migoya has recommended tape to me and uses it on his Rudall and Hudson Pratten.
Is that embouchure square, or is it the photo? I’ve seen embouchures slighly rectangular, like some modern cuts, but this looks positively right-angled!
Oh, and yeah, teflon is often frowned on, as it doesn’t allow the tenon to swell when it needs to, and it also may allow a fit that is unhealthily snug, before swelling some more during play.
Besides, it looks silly.

I own a Hernon flute and I can agree that the embouchure hole is quite rectangular, but does have some oval shaped corners. A more closer look of the embouchure hole can be seen on one of the new pics on his webpage:

Not to seem alarmist or anything like that.
I think it’s ok for a quick temporary fix. You may want to remove it before you store the flute, to let the cork breathe.

Don’t believe this stuff about Teflon tape and trapping moisture under it and causing explosions. It may very well void warranties.
People use that tape on all kinds of woodwind joints, probably more often on thread than on cork. I’ve done it on all my threaded joints, including a Rudall, without problem for more than 15 years. More like 20 years.
A Famous Maker (whose name rhymes with Hole Well) once sent me an unfinished flute with teflon-tape-joints. And this was a boxwood flute.
So there are lots of opinions. 
I think the only reason not to use it is if your flute’s maker will not honor the warranty if the flute cracks with a teflon-wrapped tenon. Same thing with oiling/lubing/not-lubricating the slide . . .
