I can’t stop looking at whistles and as soon as i find one i like, i find a problem with it. do i have commitment problems?
You may!
But, sometimes these “problems” we find when we’re just starting out on the whistle/flute, what have you, is due to inexperience, and they magically disappear after you’ve been playing for a while!
Hang in there, or have an experienced player give your problem whistle a toot to find out if it’s the whistle, or you!
And of course, not all whistles are created equal! Some do have problems, especially the cheap mass produced ones.

Good luck, and have fun!
The funny thing is that as I get more experience, I both LIKE more whistles and NEED fewer. That is, although I like most of the whistles I’ve tried, I don’t feel the need to keep looking - though I like to trade off occasionally, I could be happy with almost any decent whistle.
I own most of the cheapies and a fair sampling of more expensive models (Dixon, Susato, Serpent, Syn, Chieftain, Humphrey). I’ve had a chance to play others. But though I don’t want to give any of them up, I could be stuck with just one or two decent cheapies and not feel too limited, or bored. And though I like the sound of some whistles more than others, I play at the same (middling) level on any I pick up. Which is, probably, when my WhOA started to go away - I finally realized that sounding better needed improvements at MY end of the mouthpiece, not the whistle end. ![]()
I, no matter how I try to root it out, persist in harboring a sense of personal perfection. Therefore, I still acquire new whistles…hoping to find one that comes close to dovetailing with my innate majesty. sigh…oh, sigh…
