Help wanted for weak low notes

I thought you could clean up a rough bore with some 000 steel wool and a wooden dowel…

I just replaced the thread on my Seery with cork and am willing to try anything.

an unsmooth bore is the result of wood fibers lifting, a result of the cycle of drying/wetting/drying again.

In time, this cycle arrests (as is the case with antique flutes used a lot) and the bore remains smooth. It is why makers will often ask you to return a newly-made flute in a year in order to be re-reamed (smoothed) again.

Cleaning of the bore will remove any offending deposits (such as the calciums and such left behind from spittle, booze, beer, etc), but does not smooth the bore fibers. In fact, it could even catch in the worst case scenario.

Resmoothing with steel wool and a dowel is probably not a very wise idea, even with your basic cone flute or the cylindrical woods. you’d be thrusting an abrasive in a linear direction, unlike the circular movements of a professional reamer. You’re more likely to remove any subtle part of the bore (imagine doing that to a Rudall with all the “chambering” they did? ouch), or even compromise part of the taper. Bad idea, I’d say.
