I bought what I thought was a Feadóg whistle online on ebay and got something that looks very much like one although the mouthpiece is slightly different. It says “Irish Made TIPPERARY “D” Whistle” up at the top near the mouthpiece and has a booklet and instructional CD that says “An Seisiun Whistle Pack” at the top, and “International Whistle Book Gift Pack Edition” on the booklet.
I don’t know anything about this brand…does anyone know if it’s any good?? I hate to open it, it’s a gift.
That looks a lot like the Mark II Feadog that Cran just commented on on THe Whistle Shop site.
I’d guess it is a Mark II Feadog, and these combined packs stay in stock longer than single whistles.
Don’t panic, although Mark II Feadogs are generally considered not as nice as Mark IIIs, I have one which is great. If nothing else you’ve got a rare collectors item there!
Wow! That looks JUST like my old Feadog! (one of the “good” ones, from seven or eight years ago). The headpiece looks exactly the same! If it’s at all similar, it’s a good whistle…unlike later variations, those old Feadogs were really, really nice.
It’s not a Feadóg, it’s horrible. Even my old Mach II is better than this…much better. I’m so glad I opened it. It’s horrible.
Even the disk is awful. It has no more information than the little leaflet that comes with most whistles.
Sigh. Well, I’ve been had. I even wrote and asked the guy if it was a Feadóg, because I’ve found Feadógs to be fairly dependable. He told me it was and it wasn’t.
I’ve dealt with the guy before, so I can’t believe it. I’ve got at least half a dozen whistles from him in the past (just the whistles though, not the set).
I almost got that whistle. Now I’m glad I didn’t. But I’m sorry you did. One good thing did come out of you posting it, though, because now if anybody sees it for sale, they’ll know not to buy it.
Wow! Good thing you opened it! Looking at it without the packaging, it’s clear it isn’t a Feadog…the plastic over it must have distorted the shape of the head.
There is, but I think I’ll just see what I can do about making it right with him…I’ve dealt with him before, so maybe he can just fix it. I really would like a Feadog gift set…I loved mine and it was excellent.
By the way, I think it’s been right at a year ago since I got my first Feadog…the Mach II in the picture, it came with the gift set and I loved it. Been hooked ever since.
Kim,
So sorry about this whistle episode. However, your misfortune may save me. I hope to be in Tipperary this summer and I’ll be on the lookout for this Feadog wantabe.
Thanks for the lesson . . . this tooter was just tutored.
Hi Kim,
Judging from the shape of the head,I’m wondering if it may be a Doolin whistle?
Is the ‘ring’ around the head flattened underneath,so that the whistle doesn’t roll around on a table top?
It looks quite like a Doolin to me-Check the pics on the ‘Cheap whistle guide’ for a comparison and let us know.
It does look like that. It’s flat on the back and was actually glued into the package on that flat area. It also is flimsy feeling, which is what led me to weigh it.
The CD is very brief, covering only the front and back of one page of the booklet before going to another language. As a matter of fact, the booklet only contains the front and back of one page of instruction in each language! Very brief!
Hi again,Kim,
The Doolin is a light whistle,I didn’t go as far as weighing it,but is does feel lighter that a Generation brass ‘D’, Feadog mk 1 (quite a bit more substantial) or Feadog mk3.
What a difference a 1/10 of an ounce makes eh?
I just took it out of the package again and looked at it really closely. It doesn’t say Doolin anywhere. The only thing it says (on the booklet) is “Tipperary Music” and the name of the distributor on the back, which is “Island Distribution”.
The only maker’s mark that my Doolin has is a round gold sticker, saying ‘Doolin whistle D’.
Incidentally,I got mine as a freeby when I ordered an Oak from ‘Shannaquay’. I also own a Doolin two Piece whistle.
Kevin beat me to it, now it’s out of the packet it definitely looks like a Doolin head, and the flat part on the back confirms it.
I’ve had a couple of Doolins and was never able to get on with the heads, though the bodies were OK. Some other C&Fers quite like them. I’ve sent my Doolin heads to Jerry for his tweak experiments. Jerry is definitely the Dr. Freemanstein of C&F, I can picture him in his basement laboratory attaching the electrodes right now.
The trouble with returning the Tipperary whistle is that it’s a long way to.
