Help please. Buying a Second hand Flute.

The second hand flute I bought from e-bay was not suitable. A shop in Leeds UK often has second hand flutes and I’m wondering if people can come up with Names of flutes that I can rely on. I know Trevor James is good but I think that will be too dear. Artley appears to be good. I heard the Intermediate Yamaha and wasn’t impressed at the sound for the price. The TJ was better. I need to find a solid reliable beginners flute that isn’t going to need repadding quickly and isn’t one of the ones on e-bay that seem to come from India or Pakistan.

Well I’d have to suggest the TJJ cantabile model. Naturally it’s just the best! G

YOU WOULD!!! Typical. My relative answers my post first!

You said you weren’t thrilled with the Yamaha, but they are generally a dependable flute. It sounds like dependability is what you’re looking for (with nice tone, of course!). You may find a Yamaha to your liking. TJ has a pretty good reputation.

It’s always harder to make blanket statements about second hand instruments since your experience with them will depend a LOT on what the previous owner(s) did.

I was lucky to get to try at the community band tonight, a Blessing flute, which I didn’t like and a Yamaha. The Yamaha wasn’t bad at all. The Band leader can get a student flute for £100 and somebody else is getting onbe so I will wait and see what it is like.

Problem sorted. I sold several books of music and some tabors and whistles on ebay and some ferret stuff through the papers and then hit the net looking for a second hand flute and found this place. I’ve also now managed to sell the second hand flute I bought on as a beginners flute for slightly less than what I paid for it and it has also been fully serviced. http://www.woodwindworkshop.co.uk/flutes.htm
The Woodwind shop had some new Trevor James 10 XE split E flutes at around £230 less than any music shop I had come across. I phoned and asked why he was so cheap and apparantly it was because he had managed to buy in bulk a while ago. His terms of warranty and aftersales seem very good so Hubby gave me rest of what I needed to buy one for my birthday on the 5th October. THe workshop is way down South but he will pay to have any adjustments the flutes needs in the first 18 months at any reputable Flute Shop in Edinburgh.
