Help - Need a copy of Microsoft Sound Recorder

Hi,

I find recording myself is indispensible for learning flute & whistle. I use microsoft sound recorder, but today when I flashed up my computer, it’s nowhere to be found! (must have accidentally deleted it). Can anybody send me a copy or does anyone know where I can download it? I already checked the microsoft site, but no such luck.

Much appreciated.

NB - I run Windows XP professional (don’t know if that makes any difference)

I don’t exactly know how to send it to you but you could download Audacity for free. It’s much better and more flexible. It’s very easy to use.

It’s possible you just deleted the shortcut and not the program.

See if you still have the file before you panic:

%SystemRoot%\System32\sndrec32.exe

Thanks guys,

I found it. I searched for sndrec32.exe and found it in a folder called “last good”, which I guess allows you to recover stuff after you’ve changed something in Windows ( sorry I’m computer illiterate and don’t know the technical terms). There’s a bunch of other files (eg. solitaire, volume control) in there that recently went missing too. Now if only I could get the files back to where they were in the first place!!!

You just need to get the shortcuts back into the Program files. Or copy the shortcuts to the desktop, which is where I put shortcuts to many of my frequently used programs.

Quick, free tip:

open your file Explorer (windows key + e) and/or “find” the file.

Reduce the size of the window so you can see part of your desktop. Click and drag the file to your desktop, holding down the Alt key. You’ll see the shortcut arrow on the icon pointing to the top right. Drop the shortcut to your desktop.

Actually it should default to creating a shortcut if you try to drag and drop a program.

More tricks: Control + drag&drop = copy; shift + drag&drop = move (if you wanted to move the executable, for example, but Windows wants to just make a shortcut. Warning: this could mess up your registry, other shortcuts, or something else if you go moving programs around.

The microsoft sound recorder ordinarily only lets you record for one minute. Probably you already know this but that time can be extended. If you’re interested go to the following page and read the first article on the thread step-by-step instructions for making a recording.
