help name a band

My two music partners and I are getting requests to play at parties and such, but we don’t even know what to call ourselves yet.

I want a name that plays with language and attracts attention.

The fiddler would prefer to name us after a tune.

The guitarist wants our name to reflect the region (desert Southwest)where we play.

We play mostly Irish tunes but don’t claim to be Irtrad. We want the guitarist to sing his originals that are kinda cowboy but with jazz chords in between sets of reels and jigs.

Fiddler likes the name Gravel Walk, but the guitarist and I just don’t see how that makes a band name.

Last time we played open mic, the guitarist called us Penny Missile because I had been explaining how I needed more teflon tape to keep my instrument from flying apart. Biased, I like that name, but the other two don’t really for longterm.

A friend said that going by our last names would make us sound too much like a law firm.

Yesterday I snidely suggested In the Desert on a Band With No Name…

Help!

Lisa

Marfa and the Fandellas?

It’s funny my band has sort of the oposite problem-we have so many names we don’t know what to call our selves. Here’s a list of some of our names (feel free to steal one if you like it):

Lhiannon Shee (means Blood sucking vampire or Muse of Poets)
Cabin E
Peacocks and Weedwackers
Molly’s Toe Foo Dogs (Take off of an all guy band Molly’s Revenge)
Put the Banjo Down (guitar player learning banjo-not a pretty sound)
The Damn Banjos
The Shamrockers
Dublin Ghetto
Six Potatos
Sex Potatos (don’t ask. Sex is Latin for six)

And our latest and greatest name:

Tiwanese super lucky sex potatos from the Dublin Ghetto

ciao!
Caryn

My Favorite Marfans.

Peerie Hoose Ahint the Burn (that’s a tune name)
Across the Moor (Celtic… and deserts could be a moor in a way…)
Gaelic Geckoes
Conglomeration
Miles from Nowhere
Road to Nowhere
Dry Chicken
Celtic Cacti
The Mutant HotDogs… (Cooking fiasco… need I say more?)
Egg-Fryin’ Hot
The Marfa Phenomenon

okay… that’s all I can think of.. no matter how stupid they are or how hilarious they are… lol

The Pneumatic Marshmallows?

Nah…

Cheers.
Byll

“Terra Seca”(latin and spanish combined for Dry Land
or perhaps Terra Seca Celtica

All that pops to mind for me is “Desert Shamrock”

Someone on the board used the phrase ‘whacking beehives with a stick’ to suggest something risky. I thought Whacking Beehives might be a good group name but maybe too Smashing Pumpkinsish? And the word ‘whacking’ might be problematical…

Considering the southwest influence and Irish influence, how about

Frightened Snakes
Celtic Sidewinders
Stonehenge Scorpions
Scones n Beans

The Marfa Lights?.. lol.. I am wondering though have you seen the Marfa Lights?

How about Marfans Syndrome ( a rather rare medical condition causing tall, thin stature, hyperflexible joints, long fingers and toes, occular problems, etc-- Abe Lincoln and the violinist/composer Paginini are thought by some to have had this condition: actually useful for a fiddler).

What a wonderful surprise to log on this morning and find so many possibilities! When the group gets together I’ll have a great list to submit for discussion. Every suggestion listed above so far has merit and is worthy of consideration.

Thanks so much to everybody for the attention!

After I launched the thread yesterday, I went surfing for funny Irish English expressions or proverbs but I didn’t find much except for blarney, beyond the pale, etc. I’m taking this pursuit for a funny name very seriously.

Lisa

vaporlock: I’m going to have to organize a band just so I can use the name Philip’s Head.

bassoonistling: yes, and they’re as addicting as a TX beer! There are dozens of vehicles at the viewing park every night.

How 'bout “Chiff ‘n’ Fipple?” You’d get questions like “Which one of you if Fipple?”

Here are my suggestions:

Surreel
Reel Interest
Jig Saw
1015 Onion ( :wink:the state vegetable?!)

Jef

The South Wind
The Marfa Ramblers
The Marfa Lasses (are you all lasses?)
Marfa and the Muffins (might get some extra bookings in error)
