Help a whistling newb.

Ok, so, WhOA is hitting, I’m just trying to figure out what would make a good addition to my collection which currently consists of a Feadog in D. I’ve been looking into polymer whistles, specifically Dixon’s, but I would like a little bit more guidance on the matter.

Thanks much,
Dan

I’m not well versed in polymer or plastic whistles but I can recommend Susato. I’ve owned a couple and they are easy to play(for me) and have a bright, clear, round tone. They’re fairly inexpensive as well. Not really “polymer” persay…but in that ballpark. You should go to the Whistle Guides on the main C&F page where you can find links to makers as well as opinions and reviews. Alot of makers will also have sound samples.

The Dixon is a fine whistle.

I always recommend a tweaked whistle to newbies such as myself. With one of those, you can stop blaming the whistle as the culprit of your bad playing!

The Dixon is a good whistle. I have the aluminum tunable model and like it a lot. I had to tweak the C# hole a little bit to fix a tuning problem that is common on the Dixon whistles though.

For a no muss no fuss spot on plastic whistle, Susatos are my choice. You have to be a consistent blower to get the most out of these whistles but bang for the buck, they are a great value with good intonation.

Oh, forgot to mention that I am not opposed to buying multiple whistles at once.

Yeah, we figured that one out already

I love my Gerry Tweaked Generation, and highly recommend it.

Buy them all just like the rest of us!

If I were to restart my whistle path in life then my second whistle would be a Burke.

I don’t know Mr Freeman so I don’t know of his age but, your spelling of his name makes me think of Geriatric…lol

They look quite tempting. And considering what a good guitar costs(that’s my primary instrument), $150US doesn’t sound too bad for a high quality instrument.

I just got my first brass Burke DBSBT and it’s my nicest D by far. I wish i had started with it and saved myself lots of money.

I just got one of these a few weeks ago as well and it is very very nice. Interestingly Burke is able to achieve conical style tuning and fingering from a cylindrical whistle. :boggle:

I really like playing mine too. Now I feel like my copeland is being neglected.

Well, it looks like I have convinced my parents to purchase me a Burke for my 18th birthday that comes up on March 6th, so not too long. Now to figure if I should purchase a Dixon in D while I await the arrival of said date.

Hey there, March 6th birthday buddy. I turn 40 that day. Hmmm… I’ll have to think about what whistle I want.

If it was me I’d be looking at a whistle(s) in another key like a C, and if you still have a few $ spare I’d get the low cost but much loved Generation Bb and its baby brother the Generation Eb. You’ll get them one day so you might as well get them now.

Cool. We also share Shaquille O’Niel’s birthday.

..and Michelangelo Buonarroti’s.

I’m thinking Reyburn B flat for my b-day…

I just might do that. Are the Bb and the Eb the ones with fewer tuning problems?

Bah…March 6th is overrated. Now if you were to say that your birthday were March 5th, I’d be more impressed…only the coolest of people were born on that day

As for age, I refuse to disclose mine, and I will continue to do so even on March 5th
