I just purchased a Susato Kildare Soprano D VSB whistle from one of the online retailers in the links section. I am looking forward to getting it and joining the community finally . I had a novelty whistle for a while that my parents brought back from Hawaii. I learned to play a little on it but the intonation was so poor (no matter my embouchure or air level) I stopped. Hopefully now that I am getting a properly made whistle I will have a very enjoyable experience.
so, just thought i’d say hi and that i’m looking forward to becoming a part of this fantastic whistler community.
Ahem, back to the topic at hand…
Welcome, Damien! Hope you have a great time learning and chatting with us. I’ve been thinking of getting a susato VSB as my car-whistle, you’ll have to let us know what you think.
You might be able to tweek that novelty whistle into sounding pretty good. Just do a search on “tweeking”. Some of the worst whistles have been made to be some of the best just by using a little sticky tack. It can keep you company until your VSB arrives.
Good Luck and enjoy the C&F family.
Damien, even though that name sometimes sends chills up and down my spine (what was the name of that movie in which “Damien” was the name of the little “evil” one?), it’s always great to have another succomb to the powers of C&F!! Welcome, enjoy, and don’t be a stranger!!!

Hi, from the English Lakes, I hope you enjoy this community as much as I do, they are a great bunch, who really care(even if they claim not to in jest)
Richard.
Welcome to the party. I have a VSB that I got for Xmas, and its my current favorite. Of course it will always be my favorite…just like the four others before it…(beware of WHOA)
the movie was The Omen that Damien was the little evil one in ;P. he is also an evil character in Southpark.
french name? who knows? certainly not i, all i know is that i enjoy frightening little children with earth shattering bellows from the depths of my soul (okay not really, but that was fun to type).
i will certainly let you know what i think of the vsb.
as for tweaking my novely whistle. i think this would be hard to do. it’s one piece, made of wood. the fipple (if it can even be considered that) is conceived solely of placing a cut wood plug into the end of the wood tube. so, you kind of play it by having the edge of the tube in your mouth. it does however follow the 6 hole pennywhistle fingerings, however the toneholes were obviously not placed with any care, for some notes are blaringly sharp while others are flat as my grandmother after 2 cups of tea no matter the embouchure or air level. oh well, it was fun to play when i was figuring out fingerings. now it’s just a pain in my ears .
the vsb will be here on friday though, so all is well in my whistling books
well in fact, the name of the son of the devil is Damien Lucifer. but the root of the name damien is damon which could also have something to do with what you said
guess my name is the french derivative of Damian
DAMIAN m English
Pronounced: DAY-mee-an
From the Greek name Damianos which was derived from Greek daman “to tame”. Saint Damian was martyred with his twin brother Cosmo early in the 4th century. They are the patron saints of physicians. Another saint by this name was Saint Peter Damian, an 11th-century cardinal and theologian from Italy
