Hello whistlers

Hello everyone…
I’m new here, and new to whistling.
I’ve got my first whistle on the way, it’s a Clarke Sweet Tone in D.
From the reviews I’ve read it’s a decent starter.

My interest in tin whistles was sort of backwards.
I recently got a super cheap ocarina and really enjoyed it.
Of course, I wanted an upgrade immediately! (Ocarina Obsessive Acquisition Disorder?)
So I’ll get a couple of Mountain Ocs in G&C soon.

In the mean time I’ve been listening to music, particularly Traditional Irish Music.
Since whistles can be had so inexpensively I couldn’t resist an internet deal on the Clarke for ten bucks, shipping included.
So while I wait for the money to get my dream Ocarinas, I can scratch the musical itch with the whistle.
Also, the fingering, and ornamentation are said to be similar.
This should be FUN.

Welcome!

Enjoy your Sweetone and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the welcome Hoopy Mike.
It’ll probably be quite a while before I make progress worth posting about.

You have no idea…

Welcome.

Be sure to check out the used instrument forum on Chiff and Fipple. I just sold an older Mountain Ocarina there for about half price. New stuff shows up there all the time.

Thanks BrewerPaul.
I saw your post after a Mountain Ocarina search.
Sweet deal for whoever you sold it to.
BTW, I checked out your site- Seriously BEAUTIFUL work you have there!

Welcome to the group, maki.
I am new as well and C and F has been a super help to me already. Do not be afraid to post questions. This gang has the answers.
Check out youtube and Ryan Duns posts on tin whistling. They are great.
Have fun!!!

I appriciate that WF or D, thanks.
‘Live Free or Die’ - Best state motto ever.
Are a Free Stater?
Ryan Duns, is he the ‘Whistling Jesuit’?

He wouldn’t be the dancing priest then?

Or at least the Musical Priest.

Welcome, Maki! You certainly ARE going to have fun! Whistling is a blast and most people like the sound (I said MOST…).
When I got my first whistle in a starter kit four years ago, I played until I drove my family nuts! Even my cat climbed into my lap and begged me to stop!

The Clarke Sweetone is an excellent starter. I had a Meg (made the same) and it was great. I found if it began to sound hollow and “toyish”, I just needed to “lean into” it a bit more.

Hello Riverman! How’s your hand? Hope you’re whistling away merrily there now.

Hello, Benhall! My hand is quite fine! Thanks so much for asking–that’s touching! I was so happy with my excellent doctor’s work on my hand and wrist that I played part of a jig for him in his office! (I think he was more amused than impressed!)

Thanks for the welcome Riverman.
I’m very fortunate in that I can ‘woodshed’ at work most of the time.
No practice is possible at home, me darling wife can’t stand to listen to me practice.
(Not that I blame her.)
Amazing forum you folks have here.

I know your pain, Maki! I am banished to the basement, or to the bedroom with the door closed when I play! You may get a better reception when you branch out into lower whistles. My low A helped endear me to my family (but I’m still banished)!

…and, by the way, it’s now YOUR forum, too!

Gratuitous Father Ted reference!
NICE! :sunglasses:

Welcome,maki!

Good to see more new people on this forum…Father Ryan Dunn is someone you should check-out for sure free lessons and lots of songs. The book By Bill Ochs “The Clarke Tin Whistle” is worth buying as well…comes with a CD with many songs. Good Luck!

Thanks for the welcome Mickey66.
I’ve now seen Mr. Och’s book and CD recommend widely.
Even better, he’s on this forum. I think that will be my next buy.

I’m also looking at better whistles.
It looks like http://www.tuxedomusic.com carries the Freeman Mellow Dog D/C set.
Is that your enterprise? And, if so, do you work with P.M.Os and snail mail?
Thanks again for the howdy neighbor.

Hey Maki,
My first whistle is a mellow dog and I take it with me everywhere. I just love it.
You can get them directly from Jerry on ebay or on this forum as he is a regular.
Keep practicing.
Susan

maki,

To answer your first question Yes, it is my website…I don’t want to break any rules on this forum but if you go to the website and send me an email I will answer your questions as best as I can and thanks! I will say this tho…the Freeman Mellow Dog D/C set is a GREAT combo of whistles but I also must say… I’m a huge fan of jerry’s whistles.

maki, I read your post again and the answer to your questions is Yes! snail mail, PMO’s etc.etc…I hope, I don’t get yelled at from the MODs and Susan is correct if you would like to deal with Jerry Freeman direct he is on this forum and Ebay…where you buy a Freeman whistle does not matter that much they will be a great whistle that will last for years…ok, I’m ready to be flamed…
