I have been playing guitar for ten years and also played some with panpipes, zamponas, quenas and harmonicas. Non of these wind instruments have stoled my heart, so decided to try some “irish music flutes”, starting with whistles.
Bought a Walton D and WOOOW, I love it. 24 hours after I bought the Walton I was in the shop again and I left with another Walton C, a Clarke C and D, and also Generation Eb and F.
I like all of these a lot except for the Gen Eb.
This whistle thing has drived me NUTS and I have ordered a Copeland low and high D, as well as a D and A from Abell.
One problem though, I have sent two emails to Michael Copeland during the last 10 days or so, but no answer. Anyone knows if Copeland use to take this time to answer orders/mails???
Welcome to the board, Peter!
Did you order from Copeland’s website? I can see that they are busier than usual this week because they are getting ready to ship another big batch. Their website said that they were going to have a surplus, so check the News section of their site frequently. It took about two weeks for Michael to reply to my email, so hang on.
Welcome to Whistle Obsessive Acquisition (WhOA)! You won’t find any cure here!

Y’know, we’ve had visits from some real notables before, including as I recall, Joanie Madden. But this is the first time I recall C&F being visited by a god.
Welcome, Pan.
Who better than Pan visit the C&F forum?
(Glad to hear your interest is in whistles
otherwise, the marketing people that helped developed all of that folk lore around you really need to spoken to!)
Enjoy the forum!
Well I’m also new but unfortunately without any experience:) and ony tin whistle that I can buy in Poland is Generation one only for earlier orders… but Im happy!
I will play it some how… the start is the worst thing
The Mellow D is wider in Bore, and so takes more breath, but is, you guessed it, Mellower. And of course a dreadful pun to boot.
I have both, but the normal bore D has a slight raspiness I can’t seem to eliminate. It sounds like there’s a bit of spare plastic rattling inside, but there isn’t. I’ve even tried the blu-tack tweak wiht not improvement.
Yea, I mailed to Jim and got an answer the same day, and LUCKY ME they have both Low D and High D in stock right now. This mean I will have ´em in a couple of weeks, and in the summer I should have my Abells as well.
My Walton is the ordinary one, very fine sounding.
And yes, yes, yes, the whistle IS a magical instrument. Very simple but Oooooh so beatiful sound in the right hands (not mine though:-).
