I thought I would introduce myself… I have been playing music for most of my life in one form or another and I recently bought a tin whilstle and have been practicing daily… as of today I am a 5 day vet of the tin whistle and I am coming along pretty well with it I think.
I look forward to reading and posting here to tap some of this vein of whistle knowlege.
You haven’t seen strange looks until you’ve walked to and from the busline to work while playing a Low D. Now THOSE are strange looks. The upside is, the homeless guys don’t ask you for money. They just sort of stare.
Well in grade school I played the saxaphone and some trumpet.
Later (about age 14) I started playing guitar but I picked up an electric bass when I was about 19 and that was that. I bought an upright bass about 4 or 5 years ago and worked that into the act. I have been playing the bass (electric and upright) about 12 years.
I still play guitar a little but I really preferr the bass. I have been in the same band for about 11 years and we are still playing regularly, we mainly play rock with chunks of ska, jazz and such thrown in to keep things intresting. We have also experemented alot with spanish, funk, raggae, country and what ever else we can challenge ourselves with. I have thought deeply about trying the fiddle but that will be a decision for a different time, for now my secondary insturment is the tin whistle..!
Thanks for filling us in, Mark. I played French horn and piano as a kid and went on to study classical music in college. But I picked up the guitar at about the same age as you and also play a lot of folk and bluegrass-y music, lately even adding whistle into the mix. I love the musical diversity of the board members, even though what brings us together is our interest in ITM. All best wishes for a very satisfying adventure.
